Authorities ID four killed in Douglas accident as California family

A family of four from California have been identified as the victims of a deadly wreck south of Gardnerville on Saturday.

Jerome Calevro, 58, his wife Maria, 52, daughter Bernadette, 23, and son Jerome Daniel, 15, all of Torrance, Calif., were pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:52 p.m. collision on Highway 395 near Leviathan Mine Road.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Mark Clark, the Calevro family was northbound in an extended-cab, full-size, 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 when they were struck in the northbound lane by a southbound Suzuki XL7 driven by Dawn Katherine Miley, 42, of Gardnerville.

The impact flipped the truck, and both vehicles ended up in the desert on the side of the road.

Clark said initially investigators believed only three people were in the Dodge until they discovered Bernadette's body trapped in the back seat hours later.

Witnesses reported Miley had passed several vehicles prior to the collision, allegedly narrowly missing an oncoming white sedan prior to striking the Dodge. Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Tom Mezzetta said Douglas County dispatch had received at least one call concerning Miley's driving just before the accident. The details of that call were not available.

"It's one of the worst accidents I've seen, as far as impact," said Clark, a 27-year veteran of the NHP.

Miley was taken by helicopter to a Reno hospital where she remained Monday. The NHP described her condition as serious but stable.

Clark said from the luggage and coolers found at the accident scene, it appears the Calevro family was vacationing.

Douglas County notified the Calevro next of kin Monday afternoon.
