The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) has announced that reservations for the 2007 Special Sage Grouse Hunt at Charles Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge (northwest of Winnemucca on the Oregon - Nevada border in Washoe and Humboldt Counties) are now available and are due by no later than August 3.
Seventy five (75) reservations are available for each of two available sage grouse (sagehen) hunts.
The two bird hunts are open to both residents and nonresidents.
Both residents and nonresidents must have an upland game stamp and either a hunting license or short term permit to hunt while hunting upland game in Nevada.
The first hunt is Sept. 15-16, and is followed by the second hunt on Sept. 22-23.
Hunters successful in obtaining a reservation have a daily bag limit of three sage grouse, with a possession limit of six. Shooting hours for both hunts are Sunrise to Sunset each day.
The regulations for the special sage grouse seasons can be found at the Internet website www.ndow.org under the applications section.
Those interested in applying should visit that NDOW web site or contact their regional NDOW office to obtain an application.
All applications for the hunts must be received by the Nevada Department of Wildlife, Game Bureau, 1100 Valley, Road, Reno, NV 89512 by no later than 5 p.m. on August 3.
Open Area: Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge of Washoe and Humboldt counties as posted, Unit 033.
The Refuge or "Little Sheldon" is closed to all hunting as Per NAC 504.340.
Some of the Special Regulations for the hunts:
1. Unless his privilege is limited or revoked pursuant to law, any resident or nonresident is eligible to apply once for the 2007 Special Sage Grouse Hunt.
2. Applications for a party hunt must be stapled and mailed together. Up to four applicants may apply as a party. Parties may be comprised of a combination of residents and nonresidents. Season choices must be the same for all party applicants.
3. Hunter participation will be limited to 75 hunters per season by reservation only.
4. Deadline: Applications for reservations for the Sheldon Special Sage-grouse Hunt must be received by the Nevada Department of Wildlife, Game Bureau, 1100 Valley Road, Reno, NV 89512 by 5:00 p.m. August 3, 2007.
License Requirements: While hunting sage-grouse in association with this special hunt, successful resident applicants, aged twelve (12) and over, must possess a valid hunting license for the 2007-2008 license year.
Successful Non-Resident applicants, aged twelve (12) and over, must either possess a valid Non-Resident hunting license for the 2007-2008 license year or a nonresident short-term permit to hunt upland game.
A nonresident intending to hunt both days of the Sheldon sage-grouse hunting season using the short-term permit must also purchase the consecutive day.
An upland game bird stamp is required in addition to any hunting license or permit.
