Carson City

NNDA membership meeting set

The Northern Nevada Development Authority Membership Breakfast Meeting will be 7-9 a.m. Wednesday at Gold Dust West, Highway 50 East.

County and city managers will bring up-to-the-minute information on what's happening in Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties.

Cost is $20 for NNDA members with advance reservation; $30 for guests and at-the-door. Reservations not canceled will be billed $30.

Rural RSVP needs volunteers

RSVP needs volunteers who will assist the elderly, help in other nonprofits and assist in county offices. For more than 30 years, the Nevada Rural Counties RSVP has been helping seniors remain in their homes, rather than be institutionalized.

Dayton

Dance with lessons twice monthly

A dance for ages 16 and older, featuring local performers Don and Nadine, will be held the first and third Fridays of each month, including tonight, at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St.

Dance lessons will be from 8-8:30 p.m., and the dance will go until 10 p.m. Fox-trot, waltz, swing, Latin, country line dance and polka steps will be taught.

Cost is $5 per person, with potluck desserts for the first Friday, with a cost of $10 per person with bottled water and snacks provided the third Friday. Call 246-6227.

Dayton High reunion on July 28

Dayton High School class of 1997 will hold a 10-year reunion July 28.

The day includes an afternoon of fun and a picnic and barbecue from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Zephyr Cove Resort. Cost is $10 for the family; bring your own refreshments.

A dinner-dance cruise on the MS Dixie II will be later in the day, and is for adults only. Cost is $69. Reservations can be made by calling (775) 589-4908.

Stargaze at Dayton State Park

View the night sky and learn more about its fascinating features with the Astronomical Society of Nevada from 8:30-11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Everyone will get a chance to see the moon in a telescope for a couple of hours before it sets. Right after sunset, Saturn and Venus will be visible. Jupiter and its moons will be visible all night.

Later, as the moon sets ,high-powered telescopes will be used to view fainter objects such as nebulae, star clusters and galaxies. Bring a jacket, as evenings can be cool.

Star charts and books will be on hand to use. Meet in the group pavilion. Call 687-5678.

AARP driving program planned

An AARP Driver Safety Program class will be at the Dayton Senior Center from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. July 28.

Upon completion of the class, participants ages 55 and over may qualify for a three-year auto insurance discount.

Learn to survive in the woods

Basic Wilderness Survival Skills at Dayton State Park will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 4.

Each year, many people are lost, stranded or worse in the wilderness. Demonstrations will include showing a solar still, finding your way with a compass and building your own mini-first aid/survival kit. The park will provide materials and have enough supplies for 25 families.

Rural Summit 2007, Developing Rural Nevada's Future through Leadership, will be Aug. 28-30 at the Fallon Convention Center, 100 Campus Way.

Some of the discussion topics will be leadership, healthcare, rural tourism, energy/water/growth, fiscal issues and agriculture.

The Lyon County Democratic Central Committee will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the McAtee Building on Fort Churchill Road in Silver Springs.

Horsemen to hold moonlight ride

There will be a moonlight ride/drive and potluck dinner July 28 at 11225 Silver Lane, at Hamilton's Arena in Stagecoach.

The potluck is at 7 p.m., and the ride/drive begins at 8:30 p.m.

Car wash to aid cheerleaders

The Virginia City High School cheerleaders will put on a car wash and bake sale to raise funds for the upcoming year's uniforms. The events will be from 10 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Virginia City Fire Station, North C Street, Virginia City.

Moonlight ride on the V&T

Wine and hors d'oeuvres by Secret Service Catering are on the menu for a "Moonlight Ride on the V&T" at 8:30 p.m. July 28.

Reservations are required and costumes are optional.

Cowboy poetry at Piper's

"Saddle Sore, a Night of Cowboy Poetry and Music" will be at Piper's Opera House at 7 p.m. July 28.
