McNamara joins Wolf Pack staff

Gary McNamara, who has coached the Galena High baseball team for the past six seasons, has left that position to rejoin the University of Nevada baseball coaching staff.

McNamara will join the Nevada staff as a volunteer assistant. This will mark his second stint of serving as an assistant at Nevada having spent three seasons from 1998-2000 coaching in the program. He helped guide the Pack to a pair of NCAA Regional appearances in 1998 and 2000.

In six seasons at Galena he posted a 155-59 record and captured the last two Northern 4A titles. Galena was the state runner-up this past season and also advanced to the NIAA 4A State semifinals in 2003 and was the Northern 4A runner-up in 2005 under McNamara.

"I'm really excited to have Coach McNamara back in our program," Nevada coach Gary Powers said. "He brings great enthusiasm and knowledge to our program. I feel he has the intangibles needed to help us continue improving as a baseball program. I, personally, am looking forward to working side by side with him again."

"I'm extremely excited to be back in the Nevada baseball program," said McNamara. "After extensive talks with the coaching staff I wanted to be part of the program again and the positive direction in which the team is headed."

Bighorns 15-under tryouts Saturday

The Nevada Bighorns baseball program will be establishing a 15 and under team to play this fall.

Tryouts for the 15 and under team will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Ron McNutt Field. The team will play a schedule of 25-30 games that will run from the end of August to early October.

Games will be played on the weekends. The club will play teams from the Sacramento area, the Bay Area and possibly Southern California. The team will be coached by current Bighorns, Jeff Young, Eric Melendez and Adam Anderson.

The Bighorns will also have a 13 and under team this fall, the Silver Bullets, coached by Joe Tucker.

The Bighorns will play a doubleheader on Saturday against the Chico Sabres, beginning at 3 p.m. at McNutt Field. For more information, call Dennis Young, 267-2283.

Cycling event is set for the Carson Valley

The annual Masters District Road Championships will be on the line this weekend during the Diamond Valley Road Race and Carson Valley Classic.

Some of the fastest racers in the region who are 30-years-old and older will compete for Masters District Championship titles during the event to be held Saturday and Sunday. The event will feature top cyclists from Nevada and California.

Sponsored by the Alta Alpina Cycling Club the event begins with a road race in Diamond Valley on Saturday and continues with a criterium in Minden Park on Sunday.

"This is a great race to watch, with lots of action and good racing," said Steve Thomsen, race director for the Carson Valley Classic. "We will also be offering category 4/5 groups, which anyone with a USCF license is eligible to race in."

Those who will seek titles in the Carson Valley Classic are seasoned cyclists and master racers competing against peers in their age and gender groups. Being a master usually means having years of experience on the bike. Some master racers are former pros, and many are notable for other cycling achievements. With the addition of several new categories, under-30 racers (including juniors) can also participate in the classic.

Diamond Valley School in Woodfords will be the place on Saturday when the Road Race Championship title is pursued on the 11-mile loop around rural Diamond Valley. On Sunday, the gazebo in Minden Park turns into race headquarters for the Minden Criterium, a tree-lined course with four 90-degree right turns followed by a chicane onto the finishing straight back to the park.

Football officials clinic is Saturday

The Northern Nevada Football Officials Association will hold its annual clinic for high school football officials from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, July 28 at the Carson Valley Inn.

This will be arguably the nation's finest officials clinic. Guest speakers from the Pac10, the Western Athletic Conference and West Point will be featured.

No experience is necessary and training will be provided. Meals and instructional materials will be included.

Rookies are not required to attend. Association dues are required of all officials with discounts given to rookies.
