RSVP needs volunteers

RSVP currently needs volunteers who will assist the elderly, help in other non-profits and assist in county offices. For over 30 years the Nevada Rural Counties RSVP has been helping seniors remain in their homes, rather than be institutionalized. RSVP is able to reimburse for expenses involved in volunteering efforts. Contact Cordy Athena 687Ð4680.

Dayton

Dance with lessons twice a month

A dance for ages 16 and older, featuring local performers Don and Nadine, will be held the first and third Fridays of each month at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St.

Dance lessons will be from 8 to 8:30 p.m. and the dance will go until 10 p.m. Fox-trot, waltz, swing, Latin, country line dance and polka steps will be taught.

Cost is $5 per person, with potluck desserts for the first Friday, with cost of $10 per person with bottled water and snacks provided the third Friday. Call Denise at 246-6227.

Wilderness survival skills class set

A Basic Wilderness Survival Skills class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Dayton State Park.

Each year people become lost, stranded or worse in the wilderness. This popular program will help you discover ways to keep your outings safe. Demonstrations will include showing how a solar still works, using a compass and building a mini-first aid/survival kit. Park will provide materials. Program is limited to 25 families. Bring your lunch. To reserve space call 687-5678. Meet in the group area pavilion.

Nature activities set for children

Children can take short nature hikes, make crafts and learn about plants and animals in the Dayton State Park as part of the Nature Buddies program Aug. 20, Sept. 17 and Oct. 22.

Listening library pilot program set

The Cultural and Performing Arts for Dayton Area and the Lyon County library system are beginning a pilot program to create a listening library and book drive. The listening library will be made up of CDs and DVDs that feature classical music, both instrumental and vocal, operas, jazz, big band and musical theater.

Dayton Valley final soccer sign-ups

Final Dayton Valley soccer sign-ups will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 11 at Smiths Market in Dayton.

Cost is $25 for returning spring players, $65 for first player which includes new uniform and soccer ball. All players receive team and individual pictures, players insurance, end of the season award. Call 775-246-0707

DHS boosters hosts volleyball camp

The Dayton High School booster club will host a youth volleyball camp at the high school gym Aug. 7-9.

The camp is for elementary, middle school and high school players. Cost is $30 per player. Players should register online at www.dhsboosters.org. The camp will run form 1-3 p.m. for elementary and middle school players and from 5-7 p.m. for high school players.

All proceeds go toward the purchase of new volleyball equipment for the high school volleyball teams.

Dinner theater murder mystery at Piper's Opera House

"Dead End at Piper's" is a Dinner Theater Murder Mystery performed by Piper's Players. Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through August 9.

Barbecue cooks, ice cream makers sought

Virginia City is looking for barbecue masters and homemade ice cream makers to compete in "Chillin' and Grillin' on the Comstock," a summer food festival, beginning at noon Aug. 18.

The ice cream competition will be held in the Bucket of Blood parking lot with a creator's meeting at 9 a.m. Ingredients and equipment must be brought and the ice cream made on the spot. Tasting will begin at noon. Prizes will be given for winning creations. Entry fee is $50.

The barbecuing will be done along C Street. Cooks can barbecue anything they like. There is no entry fee for the barbecue cooks, but a gas grill is required because of fire danger. For more information on the barbecue, call 775-847-9016.

Firefighters hold golf tournament

The Storey County Volunteer Fire Department and the Fire Fighters Association are holding a "Tee It Up 4 Kids" golf tournament at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 25 at Empire Ranch Golf Course in Carson City.

This tournament was started in 2001 to raise funds for the Storey County Volunteer Fire Department's annual Children's Christmas Party in Virginia City. New toys are distributed to children from infants to 5th-graders in Storey County.

In 2005 the VFD teamed up with Storey County Firefighters Association to raise funds for the Community Assistance Program.
