Sun Devils fall to Tri-County in World Series

The Sierra Sun Devils looked to have taken control after a wild three innings, only to see the bottom drop out.

The Tri-County Gamblers scored nine runs in the fourth inning on their way to a 17-12 win over the Sun Devils on Saturday in the Joe DiMaggio World Series at John L. Harvey Field. Tri-County advanced to a winners bracket game in which it will play San Bruno. Calif., at 3:30 p.m. at John L. Harvey Field for the right to play in Tuesday's championship round. San Bruno was impressive again in an 11-1 win over San Francisco's Trinity Maintenance.

In other games, the Galena Spartans beat Vallejo, Calif., 5-3 and San Carlos. Calif., beat Mendocino, Calif., 10-0. The other two games today will be elmination contests as the Spartans will play the Sun Devils at 12:45 p.m. and San Carlos will face Trinity at 10 a.m.

Tri-County appeared to be in control when it had a 4-0 lead behind Michael Gleason, who struck out the side in the first inning with a fastball in the 88-91 mile per hour range and a nasty slider. Gleason also went 5-for-5.

After Alex Thomson's single, Gleason's two-run home run off of Wil Schumacher gave Tri-County a 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded and one out, the runner from third tried to score on a wild pitch, but David Leid threw to Schumacher to cut down the runner. Schumacher then got a popout to end the inning.

Thomson singled again in the top of the second and after catcher's interference loaded the bases with one out, a dropped popup gave Tri-County a 3-0 lead. But then Phil Mannelly made a diving stop at first of a shot to rob Brock Neil of a possible two-run hit and Mannelly threw out the runner at the plate.

Kris Cole followed with an RBI single, but Niko Saladis cut down Gleason at the plate and Tri-County settled for a 4-0 lead. The play appeared to serve as a turning point as Leid tagged Gleason hard.

Gleason apparently took exception because after Roman Davis singled, he hit Leid, giving the Sun Devils runners at first and second with no outs. Stephen Yarrow followed with a two-run triple and then Yarrow scored on a groundout to make it 4-3.

Schumacher settled down to shut out Tr-County in the third and the Sun Devils scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-4 lead.

But then Tri-County erupted for nine runs in the fourth and led 15-6 before the Sun Devils scored six unearned runs in the fifth to close to within 15-12. Gleason finished with a line of 12 runs, six earned, on nine hits while striking out 10 over five innings to pick up the win.

Also for Tri-County, Thomson had four hits and Brock and Cole each had two hits. Yarrow, Cory Eilers, Davis and Brett Howsley all had two hits for the Sun Devils.

GALENA 5, VALLEJO 3

Galena outhit Vallejo 16-5, but left 10 runners and had three runners thrown out. But thanks to Wil Hojas' complete-game three-hitter, Galena stayed alive and eliminated Vallejo.

Vallejo took a 3-1 lead in the first after Gregory Grace singled and Anthony Neves walked. Geread Filippi followed with a three-run homer. But the two hits in the first were the only hits Honjas gave up until Joel Moreno had a hit in the seventh.

Galena had taken a 1-0 lead after Pete Lazzari and Eric Maupin singled and Jake Hess walked to load the bases. Lazzari scored on a passed ball.

Galend tied it in the fourth when Eric Underwood doubled and Brian Poynter hit a two-run homer to make it 3-3. In the fifth, Hess singled and J.D. Peters followed with an RBI single to give Galena a 4-3 lead. In the sixth, Poynter tripled and Lazzari followed with an RBI single to make it 5-3.

Lazzari and Peters each had three hits, Maupin also doubled to give him two hits, Pointer and Jacob Anderson each had two hits and Scott Underwood, Eric Underwood and Levi Stafford all addedd a hit for Galena.

SAN BRUNO 11, TRINITY 1

Jimmy Parque drove a shot to the right field fence for the walk-off game-winning hit in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 11-1 and give San Bruno the win. Parque was officially credited with an RBI single. M.J. Stocker singled and Lucas Hagsberg doubled to set up Parque's game-winning hit.

Mike Watkins' two-run double gave San Bruno a 2-0 lead in the first. San Bruno scored six runs in the third to take an 8-0 lead.

Hagsberg singled and Ricky Molina followed with an RBI single. Ivan Hidalgo hit an RBI single, Kevin Daniele had an RBI double and Anthoony Gutierrez hit a two-run double during the rally.

Pat Burford doubled and scored on a dropped flyball to cut the deficit to 8-1 in the fourth for Trinity. In the bottom of the fourth, Parque singled, Molina hit an RBI double and Hidalgo followed with an RBIn single to make it 10-1.

Parque, Hidalgo, Molina and Daniele all had two hits for San Bruno. Justin Prasad didn't allow an earned run for the complete game win. Anthony Lecue had two hits, including a double, for Trinity.

SAN CARLOS 10, MENDOCINO 0

Jamie McGowan pitched a complete game three-hit shutout as San Carlos eliminated Mendocino.

San Carlos ended the game in the sixth when Kevin Timko hit an RBI single. After Tony Cooper doubled, he scored on an error to make it 10-0 and end the game. Cooper, Jarrod Hopper and Anthony Armanino all had two hits for San Carlos.
