Gibbons begins rural tour

Gov. Jim Gibbons and members of his cabinet left Carson City Monday for a week-long tour of the state.

He said he wants to meet with Nevadans "where they work and live" to discuss issues important to residents.

Spending about 45 minutes at each town, he planned to make stops in Minden, Yerington, Hawthorne and Tonopah Monday. Tuesday's list includes a tour of Monte Cristo's Castle in Esmeralda County, then Round Mountain, a tour of Mormon cricket habitat in Eureka and a barbeque in Ely.

Wednesday he'll tour the Ely prison and meet with officials in Elko " including a fire briefing. Wednesday's final meeting is another barbeque in Winnemucca.

Thursday the tour will head back to western Nevada with stops in Lovelock, Fallon and Fernley. It wraps up Friday with a meeting at the Virginia City Senior Center.

He said he plans to discuss many of the new laws and policies approved during the 2007 Legislature and local issues in each city.

He plans a second summer tour beginniing Sept. 10 to visit the southern Nevada counties.
