120 YEARS AGO


Mingled with the productive Sagebrush lands of Nevada are large patches of alkali which most people look upon as absolutely worthless for any purpose. This is a great mistake. They can be reclaimed by mixing sand and manure with them or by treating them with about five tons of gypsum to the acre. Near American Flat can be found inexhaustible quantities of gypsum which anyone can have by taking it out.


100 YEARS AGO


Cole C. Atherton, one of the old residents of this city, died at his home in the eastern part of the city. Heart failure was the cause of death. He had been of ill health as of recently and his passing was not entirely unexpected. For many years Mr. Atherton was a track engineer for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad and also served the county as commissioner.


70 YEARS AGO


Stanley Sundeen was elected president of the Carson City 20-30 club at a meeting held last evening. Other officers for 1937 include Lawrence Johnson, vice-president, Kerwin Foley and Richard Gamwell, directors.


50 YEARS AGO


Sade J. Grant who spent the week in San Antonio, Texas, attending the supreme session of Daughters of the Nile, returned home Sunday morning by plane. She reports having a fine time in Texas.


20 YEARS AGO


An effort to pull Nevada from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency has died in the Assembly. Assembly Minority Leader Lou Bergivin, R-Gardnerville, said he is resigned to more of the same unfair land-use restrictions at Lake Tahoe for the next two years.


10 YEARS AGO


Carson City deputy Mitchell Pier has been picked as the Rotary Club's Deputy Sheriff of the Year. Pier, a native of Carson City, picked law enforcement because he did really well on the law enforcement test.
