Alex Updegrove, a 2007 Carson High School graduate, received the George T. Horton Scholarship from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. The scholarship provides $36,400 a year for five years. Updegrove received early acceptance to the school in December and hopes to major in mechanical engineering and minor in management.
2003 CHS grad to intern at Juilliard
Lora McComb, a 2003 graduate of CHS grad has received a Bachelor of Science in Theatre Design and Technology with a minor in Business from the University of Evansville, Ind. She has just accepted a stage management internship at Juilliard School of Music in New York. She is the daughter of Steven and Lyn McComb of Carson City.
WNCC instructors of the year announced
The Western Nevada Community College United Students Association has named its Outstanding Instructors of the Year for the 2006-2007 academic year.
Mathematics instructor Scott Morrison was honored by WNCC Carson City/Douglas students and English instructor Kathy Reynolds was chosen by the WNCC Fallon/Rural Centers student body.
Doctor of dental surgery degree earned by Carson student
Eric Allan Avitia, of Carson City, received a doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Carson student earn research fellowship
Cassia Paigen Roth of Carson City has been awarded a Surdna Foundation Undergraduate Research Fellowship from Bowdoin College.
Bowdoin College is a small liberal arts college in Brunswick, Maine.
Area students selected to national society
• Stephen M. Deterding, Sierra Lutheran High School student, has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars.
Deterding, a junior, is the son of Rev. Dr. Paul and Mrs. Donna Deterding of Carson City.
• Carson High School student Krista M. Hyatt has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars.
Krista is the daughter of Rose Painter.
Former Carson student graduates from Macalester
Jeffrey Rogers, a graduate of Carson High School, graduated from Macalester College recently. He received a liberal parts degree in physics.
He is the son of Jon and Sally Rogers of Carson City.
