Fox Carlton Hughes to sign latest book today


The Brewery Arts Center will host Fox Carlton Hughes' book signing at 2 p.m. today in the Donald W. Reynolds Black Box theater. Hughes' latest children's book, "Rainbow Rhino", is the story of a little rhinoceros boy who manages to turn his 'weirdness" (an oversized tusk complete with rainbow colors) into an asset.


The signing will include a talk about the world of children's books meant for kids and adults alike.

Sign-ups for teen reading program under way


"You Never Know" is the theme for the summer reading program for teens at the Douglas County Public Library. Sign-ups began Friday, and the program continues through Aug., 18. Complete a registration form at the library and start reading. There will be free giveaways and drawings for participants during the program.


Special events at the library include Teen C.S.I., Teen Harry Potter Party, and Teen Ice Cream Social. Win prizes from Subway, Port of Subs, Ironwood Stadium Cinema 8, Wal-Mart, Target, Silver Strike Lanes and more.

Summer concert series kicks off in Minden


After a decade of popular summer concerts at Minden Park, a new series held on alternating weekends will begin its inaugural season at Minden Village today.


Douglas County may now enjoy free, world-class concert during the summer.


The first performance 7 p.m. today, will be by acclaimed guitarist and singer Beppe Gambetta of Genoa, Italy. This will be followed up on July 7 with a performance by Seattle jazz guitarist Michael Powers.


Other performers will be acoustic rock pioneer John Batdorf, the leader of the '70s group Batdorf and Rodney, and the Duo-Tones, two veterans of the '60s surf music scene.

Wolf Howl competition today at Animal Ark


Animal Ark is having a Wolf Howl event from 6-8:30 p.m. today. See the pack when they are most active, learn about wolves and practice your howling.


The evening begins with viewing of all the animals housed at the nature center followed by a 30-minute presentation on wolves.


The audience will sit opposite the wolf enclosure which provides close up viewing of the wolves during the program and is ideal for listening to the wolf howl chorus.


An animal keeper will encourage the wolves and coyotes to howl prior to the wolf howl contest. Kids and adults too must pay close attention if they have any chance of winning the wolf-howl competition which takes place at the end of the howl.
