RENO - Jake Wade's shoulder was still sore from Thursday's ride aboard Golden Ghost during the Xtreme Bull competition.
Wade bounced back on Saturday with an 86-point ride to take second place in bulls at the 88th annual Reno Rodeo at Reno Livestock Events Center.
"It was a pretty fair ride," said Wade, who hails from Alamo. "He spun to the right, which is how I like to go. I saw him on Thursday, and he turned left. I half expected him to do that.
"Once you get in the chutes, you have to forget all about that (past rides). I love this rodeo. I should be back later this week."
The bulls have dominated the competition. In the first two days of competition. Only four riders have managed to stay on board for eight seconds.
"There are some pretty good bulls out there," Wade said.
DELAYED AGAIN
For the second straight year, the Reno Rodeo had to start a performance late.
Last year it was because some horses had disappeared from a nearby ranch where they were being kept.
This time it was because of a fire at Reno Rendering which is located on Wells Avenue across the street from the rodeo grounds. The building eventually collapsed, and the fire was eventually contained. The performance started 15 minutes late.
According to rodeo officials, traffic was being diverted to different parking areas.
LOCAL ROPERS DON'T SCORE
Two local teams - Fallon's Flint Lee and Gardnerville's Casey Glazier, and Fernley's Jake Boegle and Topaz's Matthew Huffman - participated in team roping, but neither posted a score.
Clay Tryan and Walt Woodard posted a score of 5.8 seconds, and David Motes and Matt Kasner were close behind at 6.1. Wade Ryan and Brock Andrus were third Saturday at 7.4.
Carson City's Susie Luschar Clymo was seventh in barrel racing, posting an 18.49.
MUTTON BUSTING
Reno's Paul Carothers won the Saturday Mutton Bustin'. The 6-year-old was given a score of 80.
ON TAP
Steer wrestling slack is scheduled at 7 a.m. today, and that performance is free and open to the public. The special "Kids Rodeo" is slated for 6 p.m. The evening performance starts at 7.
