Reginald 'Bryn' Armstrong

A memorial service for Reginald "Bryn" Armstrong, 91, will be from 2-5 p.m. Saturday in the Rinckel Mansion.

Mr. Armstrong died June 9, 2007, at Evergreen Convalescent Center. He was born May 30, 1916, in Syracuse, Kan., to Louis Earl and Mary E. Minor Armstrong.

When a young boy, his family moved to Ely and then Virginia City, where he attended the Fourth Ward School. His family later moved to Las Vegas where he graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1936.

He entered the University of Nevada, Reno as a journalism major in 1938, and in 1942 was hired by a daily newspaper in Willows, Calif.

He joined the U.S. Army in September 1942 and was stationed at Camp Haan in Riverside County, Calif., where he published the Camp Haan Tracer. He was discharged from the Army Feb. 1, 1946, and reported for the Woodland, Calif., Daily Democrat until 1948 when he began reporting for the Sacramento Bee covering the Sacramento Valley, Yuba and Sutter counties.

Mr. Armstrong accepted a job at the Reno Evening Gazette in 1949, and in 1956 was promoted to assistant managing editor. In 1962, he joined the Las Vegas Sun as executive editor. In 1977, Gov. Mike O' Callahan appointed him the first full-time chairman of the Nevada Parole Board, where he served for 16 years.

In 1993, Gov. Bob Miller appointed him executive director of the Nevada Dairy Commission, a position he held until he retired in 1996 at the age of 80. He then moved to Port Townsend, Wash., returning to Carson City several years ago.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leola, and daughter Eileen Horton.

Among his survivors are daughters Mindy and Amanda Armstrong; son Jeffrey Armstrong and grandchildren Michael Bryn Armstrong and Nicole and John Horton.
