Dry conditions spark fires across Northern Nevada

While the focus of many firefighters was on the blaze burning near South Lake Tahoe, several other fires ignited throughout Northern Nevada, including two fires in Reno and two small fires in Silver Springs, one that destroyed two buildings.

Lyon County fire officials responded to a fire on Varney Lane in Silver Springs just before 3 p.m. Sunday. The fire consumed three acres of vegetation and destroyed a trailer, a barn and some sheds. Several other structures were threatened, but firefighters were able to contain the fire at about 4 p.m.

Officials said the cause of the fire in still under investigation.

Once the fire was classified as controlled, crews from Lyon County were reassigned to help battle the Angora fire in South Lake Tahoe.

Lyon firefighters also responded Sunday evening to a 15-20 acre fire burning on private land at the intersection of Leegard and David roads on the south side of Highway 50, five miles west of Stagecoach. The Leegard fire, started at 7:40 p.m. was out by 9:30 p.m.

In northwest Reno, the fire near Mae Anne Drive has been completely contained after consuming about 200 acres and briefly forcing the closure of Interstate 80, according to the Reno Fire Department. The fire sparked just before 1 p.m. Sunday near the area of Mae Anne and Robb drives. At 3:15 p.m., another fire sparked off of Mayberry Drive.

Both fires were contained just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Crews are also gaining control of the Plateau fire, which started Saturday morning in the Hunter Creek area west of Reno. The fire is reported as 90 percent contained, with full containment expected Tuesday.

The fire has burned 86 acres, and crews spent Sunday reinforcing fire lines.
