Burning bush prompts worried response

Worried fire crews responded to a report of another brush fire at the Galena Bridge on Tuesday.

But, unlike a month ago, the blaze was out when they arrived. Department of Transportation spokesman Scott Magruder said the fire was literally "a burning bush," probably set ablaze by one of the numerous pieces of heavy equipment working to complete the bridge across Galena Creek.

"They called the fire department just to let them know. It's standard," said Magruder. "They sent two firefighters. They took a look at it. It was out."

Magruder said the contractor is now prepared in case a piece of heavy equipment starts the brush burning in that area.

"One of the criticisms of the contractor last time is that they need to carry fire extinguishers and shovels."

About a month ago, a piece of equipment sparked a blaze that consumed some 30 acres before it was contained.
