Fundraiser for house fire victims

A fundraiser will be held 2-6 p.m. June 30 at Our Park on Highway 50, Dayton.

The event will benefit Bruce and Shirley Allen, whose Imperial Road home in Dayton burned June 9.

Shirley Allen is known for her animal rescue work and is program manager for Least Resistance Training Concepts, a nonprofit wild horse mentoring program. She also operates Lucky Horse Corral, rescuing wild and domestic horses.

The event will be a spaghetti feed catered by Daytona Casino, and will include a raffle, silent auction, tack sale and more.

Tickets for the dinner will be $6.

Sponsors are also needed to cover the cost of food and beverages for the event.

Listening library planned

The Cultural and Performing Arts for Dayton Area and the Lyon County library system are beginning a pilot program to create a listening library and book drive. The listening library will be made up of CDs and DVDs that feature classical music, both instrumental and vocal, operas, jazz, big band and musical theater.

Crafters sought for craft fair to aid youth group

Dayton Venturing Crew 777, a scouting group of 14- to 21-year-olds in Dayton, is looking for crafters to participate in its craft fair July 13-15 at St. Mary's Art Center in Virginia City.

Proceeds will be used to help buy uniforms and help with programs over the summer.

Nature activities for children set

Children can take short nature hikes, make crafts and learn about plants and animals in the Dayton State Park as part of the Nature Buddies program July 16, Aug. 20, Sept. 17 and Oct. 22.

Equestrian drill team trail trials set

The BlackJack Equestrian Drill Team will hold trail trials at Fort Churchill Boy Scout Camp on Saturday. First rider out at 9 a.m., last rider out at 10 a.m. Cost is $30 if registered before June 29 or $35 the day of the ride. For information call 867-2149 or 217-0023.

Formation riding clinic set

There will be a Formation Riding Clinic 101, 10 a.m. Saturday, conducted by Vince Pirozzi at Hamilton's Arena, 11225 Silver Lane, Stagecoach.

Sponsored by High Desert Horsemen, the clinic will teach your horse to maneuver in close proximity to other horses. You can also learn how to control your horse in stressful situations. Some of the exercises will be riding in columns of two, four and eight, as well as moving into and out of a wedge at a walk and a trot.

The clinic is limited to 20 riders. Prepay and register to hold your spot. Clinic fee is $15 members, $25 nonmembers; $5 less for those under 18. Memberships are available the day of the clinic.

Swap meet/yard sale is this weekend

The Stagecoach Community Development Foundation will hold a "stop and swap" yard sale today through Sunday at various locations in Stagecoach.

Maps of the area with each yard sale marked will be provided and can be picked up at the first stop on the map, 8150 Cheyenne Trail on the days of the sale, or at ERA Pioneer Properties, 1050 Highway 50 East in Silver Springs, beginning Thursday.

Residents of Stagecoach who wish to have their yard sale on the map must call 629-9243 and give their name and address no later than Tuesday. There is no charge to be on the map, but a donation to the foundation is appreciated. Call Norris Easley at 720-0250.

Fourth of July Parade seeks entrants

Virginia City's annual Fourth of July Spectacular will include the traditional parade, Comstock Cowboys Second Amendment Celebration Concert and a fabulous fireworks display.

The Comstock is looking for new parade entries to join the regulars.

Classic cars, equestrian groups, marching groups, bands and many more entries, from the patriotic to the offbeat, will join the annual parade.

Those wishing to enter the parade should call 847-4768 for a parade form.

Forms need to be returned by mail or fax by July 1 to be part of the advance lineup. Late entries are still welcome, but will be put at the end of the parade.

Lineup will begin at 11 a.m. at the Fourth Ward School.

Tour of Sutro ghost town planned

A private tour of the ghost town of Sutro will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 30, hosted by Peter and Dana Leonard. The event is one of the "Parties of the Year" offered by the Historic Fourth Ward School in Virginia City.

The historic town of Sutro is privately owned by the Sutro Tunnel Co.

Access to this historic property is prohibited except as a fundraising opportunity for the Historic Fourth Ward School. Attendance is limited to 30 and the cost is $80 per person. The event will include a barbecue lunch. For more information, call 847-0975.

Dinner theater murder mystery at Piper's

"Dead End at Piper's" is a Dinner Theater Murder Mystery performed by the almost world-renowned Piper's Players. Dinner is at 6:30 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays during July, except for July 12 when The Cool River Trio returns to Piper's.

Cool River Trio at Piper's Opera House

The Cool River Trio returns to Piper's Opera House in Virginia City on July 12.

The acoustic folk and bluegrass group performs music from the 1950s and 1960s from The Limelighters, the Kingston Trio, Ricky Nelson and more.

The trio will kick off the Bluegrass on the Comstock Festival to be held in Miner's Park.

Tickets are $15 for adults, free for kids. Bar opens at 6:30.
