Bighorns, Capitols sweep

The Nevada Capitols put on their running shoes, stealing 13 bases on their way to a doubleheader sweep of South Tahoe on Saturday at Ron McNutt Field.

The Capitols won the opener 12-2 and the nightcap 10-4. Meanwhile the Nevada Bighorns also swept a doubleheader, beating the San Jose Brewers 6-5 and 6-0.

In the opener for the Capitols, Kyle Mandoki pitched three scoreless innings for the win and Tyler Smith allowed one unearned run in one inning of relief.

The Capitols broke a scoreless tie in the third when David Leid walked, stole second and scored on Matt Aboumrad's RBI single. Cody Stevens followed with a two-run home run that made it 3-0.

Ray Barrett singled and scored on Paul Cagle's RBI double to make it 4-1 in the fourth. The game ended on the mercy rule when the Capitols scored seven runs in the fifth.

Stevens doubled, Cagle, Aboumrad and Bryt Lewis all had RBI singles and Stevens hit an RBI double to make it 10-2. The game ended when Matt Rutledge's infield single brought home one run and a throwing error on the play brought home another run to make it 12-2.

Stevens had three hits, Rutledge had two hits, including a double, Cagle and Aboumrad each had two hits and Leid, Rob Valerius and Kyle Stone all added a hit.

In the nightcap, winning pitcher Nick Smallman struck out five over three innings. Joe Skates, Stevens and Brooks Greenlee all pitched an scorless inning in relief. Grenlee finished up, retiring the side in order and striking out two in the seventh.

The Capitols took a 4-0 lead in the first. Stevens had an RBI double and Lewis hit an RBI single during the rally.

The Capitols went up 9-2 in the fourth. Greenlee hit a two-run single and Lewis had an RBI single that made it 7-2. Brett Valley's bunt single scored Greenlee and Barrett followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 9-2. Smallman was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-2 in the fifth.

Greenlee, Stevens, Stone and Lewis all had two hits and Barrett added a hit. The Capitols will next play at 5 p.m. Monday at Manogue.

BIGHORNS SWEEP

In the nightcap, Daniel Eastham pitched a complete game one-hit shutout, striking out 12, walking two and hitting a batter. Eastham was denied a no-hitter only because the Brewers decided to break up the no-hitter with a leadoff bunt single in the sixth. But Eastham got the next batter to hit into a double play.

Eastham preserved the shutout in the seventh after allowing runners to advance to second and third with no outs. Eastham got two strikeouts and a groundout to preserve the shutout.

The Bighorns took a 3-0 lead in the second when J.J. Delallo doubled and scored on Aaron Henry's double. The Bighorns went up 5-0 in the fifth in Delallo's RBI double and Henry's RBI infield single.

In the fifth, Jeff Young's RBI single made it 6-0. It look like the Bighorns had taken a 10-0 lead on a drive to left field by Tyson Jaquez, but instead of a grand slam home run, the wind knocked the ball down and the left fielder made the catch at the fence. Henry and Delallo each had two hits for the Bighorns.

Steve Mays' walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the seventh gave the Bighorns the win in the opener. After Nick Nyman was hit by a pitch and Eastham singled, Mays came through with his game-winner.

The Bighorns took a 1-0 lead in the first when Henry singled, stole second and eventually scored. But the Brewers scored four runs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Henry singled and Young doubled. Henry then scored on a fielder's choice to make it 4-2.

In the sixth, Mays and Adam Anderson singled and Tom O'Brien hit an RBI single. Pinch runner Delallo then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 4-4.

in the seventh, the Brewers scored an unearned run to take a 5-4 lead. But Jesse Rasner was able to work out of jams in the sixth and seventh to keep the Bighorns in the game.

In the sixth with runners at second and third and one out, Rasner got a strikeout and a flyball to end the threat. In the seventh after the Brewers scored, they again had runners at second and third with one out, but Rasner got a strikeout and a comebacker to prevent any more damage.

Rasner pitched a complete game for the win, allowing two earned runs while striking out seven. Henry, Mays, Anderson and O'Brien all had two hits and Tyson Jaquez and Nick Nyman each added a hit for the Bighorns.

The Bighorns play again at 6:30 p.m. today against the South Tahoe Emeralds at McNutt Field.
