A burglary suspect who shot a property owner during a struggle on Salvage Lane in Fernley on Sunday night is being sought by police.

According to a press release from the Lyon County Sheriff's Department, deputies responded to 25 Salvage Lane at 10:34 p.m. for a report of a commercial burglary in progress at Speedway Recyclers.

The property owners, a 44-year-old woman and 59-year-old man, informed dispatchers they had detained a suspect at gunpoint.

Lyon County Sheriff's Lt. Rob Hall said the property owners both had firearms.

While still on the phone, a struggle between the suspect and the property owners began. The suspect was able to wrestle a shotgun away from one of the property owners and shot the 44-year old woman in the lower leg.

As the suspect left, the property owner fired at him with a .38-caliber pistol. It remains unknown if the suspect was struck.

Hall said the woman was struck with bird shot and suffered only minor injuries. She was released by medical personnel on scene.

The suspect fled the scene on foot. The Lyon County SWAT Team searched the area and cleared it while the Washoe County Raven helicopter was summoned to search for the suspect using infrared cameras.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his mid- to late-twenties, last seen wearing blue jeans and a dark-colored sweatshirt.

Anybody with information about the case is urged to contact Detective Jon Mack at 775-577-5026.
