Crosstumblers' gymnasts dominated the competition at the Swingtime Invitational held last Saturday in Boise, Idaho.
Level 7 gymnast Gina Gallo swept the competition placing first in all events
and the all-around.
"Gina came into the competition not realizing how good she really is," said coach Jim Walker. "I think she may have an idea now that she really has mastered the level." Gallo received a 9.0 on vault, 9.0 on uneven parallel bars, 8.65 on balance beam, and 9.15 on floor exercise.
Also in the Level 7 girls division, Michelle McDonald did well placing second on beam (8.35) and third on vault (8.35) and floor (8.6). An uncharacteristic fall on bars dropped her to fourth in the all-around with a score of 33.10.
Level 6 gymnast Kayla Skog also had a successful meet. After taking almost three months off of serious training, Skog placed first on floor (8.35) and third on vault (8.825), as well as qualifying to Level 7.
In the boys competition, Level 5 gymnast Malik DePasquale continued the winning streak, placing first in the all-around with a 53.80. DePasquale also place first on floor (9.3), rings (8.8) and high bar (9.5) and second on pommel horse (8.4), vault (9.3) and parallel bars (8.5).
"Malik was struggling while warming up on parallel bars, however he pulled it together," Walker said. "By the time he got to high bars he was so focused that he hit a near perfect routine earning over a point higher than the second place finisher."
Also competing was eight year old Ryan Walker who continued to develop, raising his all-around score by more than five points to place seventh with a 47.90. He also received his first 9.0 as a level 5 for a much improved vault and placed fifth on rings (8.2) and sixth on pommel horse (7.6).
Six year old Mowgli McKeon traveled to Boise to compete in his first ever competition. In the level 4 division, McKeon placed second on floor (8.4) and third on vault (8.9).
This will be the last Level 7 competition for Gallo and McDonald as they focus on competing in USAIGC competitions where they intend to qualify for the National Championships to be held in Florida in June. The boys team will complete its season at the Nevada State Gymnastics Championships this weekend in Reno.
