The planned closing of State Route 342 at Greiner's Bend has been delayed due to inclement weather forecast for this week.

According to the National Weather Service, rain and possibly some snow is expected in the Tuesday and Wednesday in the Virginia City area.

Officials from Gradex Construction, the contractor doing the work, requested at least a week's delay and possibly more.

The route was to close to replace a guardrail on the steep switchback on the road that leads to Virginia City from the south.

"They need to have a couple of weeks of solid good weather, with no storms of any kind," said NDOT spokesman Scott Magruder. "You don't want to leave anyplace without a guardrail, especially a steep drop-off like that."

There was no word on exactly when the work would begin, but signs will be placed along the route. The road will remain open to local traffic, while through traffic would take SR341, the truck route.
