DAYTON - A 6-year-old was injured Thursday morning after she was struck by a car that jumped the curb at Sutro Elementary School and crashed through the playground.
Lt. Jim Cupp said the accident happened about 8:55 a.m. as Judy Perez, 27, driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, was delivering her daughter to first-grade classes.
Perez said when she pulled up to the gate surrounding the kindergarten and first-grade playground on Dayton Village Parkway, her brakes didn't work, according to Cupp.
The kindergarten girl whose name has not yet been released, was in line to begin classes for the day, he said. It's unclear if the child was thrown by the vehicle or trapped underneath at any point.
After striking the girl, the Jeep continued on, traveling a total of 156 yards into the playground.
The child, who was "alert and talking," was taken from the playground by helicopter to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. Her condition is not available at this time.
Perez, who has volunteered for a blood draw to determine if she was under the influence of anything, remained at the scene for the duration of the investigation.
Cupp said there was no indication that Perez was under the influence, but the testing is standard.
The Jeep was impounded and its brake system will be inspected, according to a news release.
Possible charges against Perez are pending a review by the district attorney.
Classes at the school were not interuppted.
