Cassie Vondrak, Daria Leid and Dacey Hassey all hit three-run home runs in the first three innings to send the Carson High softball team on its way to an easy sweep of South Tahoe in a doubleheader on Saturday at CHS.
Carson (10-0, 3-0) won the opener 19-2 and the nightcap 10-1. In the opener, Vondrak hit a three-run homer in the first, Leid hit a three-run shot in the second and Hassey belted a three-run shot in the third.
Kaitlin Burroughs went 3-for-4 with four runs and an RBI, Candice Rutledge had two hits, three runs and four RBI, Abby Rankl had three hits, three runs and two RBI, Leid had two hits, Nikki Keller had two hits and a run, Katie McEwan had two hits and three runs and Krista Mattice had a run and an RBI.
Keller allowed two unearned runs on one hit while striking out three through three innings. Leid pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, striking out one and walking none in the game that was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.
In the nightcap, Vondrak pitched a complete-game three hitter, striking out seven over seven innings while walking one.
Christa Casci had a hit and an RBI, Rutledge and Rankl each had two hits, Desirae Clampitt had two hits and an RBI, Burroughs had an RBI double, Loretta Cagle had a hit and an RBI, Leid went 2-for-2, McEwan and Hassey each added a hit and Keller added an RBI.
"The girls were trying to work opposite field which was kind of nice to see," said Carson coach Scott Vickrey about the second game.
"The bats are working really well. They're playing good ball right now. I'm happy with them.
"The pitchers are doing what they need to do. The hitters are doing what they need to do."
DAYTON SWEEPS
Dayton swept a doubleheader against North Tahoe at home, winning both games in five innings due to the mercy rule. The Dust Devils won the opener 12-2 and Sara Simmons hit a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to give Dayton the win in the nightcap.
Breann DeHaven hit two two-run homers for Dayton (2-4, 2-2 in the Northern 3A) in the opener. Freshman Brittany Curtis went the distance for the win, pitching a one-hitter.
Amanda Beard was 2-for-3 with two runs, a double and an RBI, Simmons went 3-for-3 with three runs and a double, Brittany Burrows went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI, Matia Spencer was 1-for-1 with an RBI, Curtis had a double and an RBI and Nicole Iratcabal added a hit.
Sierra Barnwell went the distance for the win in the nightcap, allowing four hits, walking one and striking out eight. She was also 2-for-2 with four runs.
DeHaven had a double, an RBI and a run, Simmonws had two hits and two runs and Spencer had a hit, a run and two RBI.
CHS JVS SWEEP
Carson swept a doubleheader against South Tahoe, winning the opener 13-3 and the nightcap 8-2.
Carson trailed 2-0 in the opener when it scored five runs in the third on Brittany Duncan's three-run homer and Lisa Shores' two-run single. Carson broke the game open with six runs in the fourth.
Tami Conn had four hits, three runs and an RBI, Shores had four hits, three RBI and two runs, Duncan had three hits, two runs and four RBI, Belen Munoz had three hits and two RBI and Rebecca Gansberg had two hits and two runs.
Melissa Coyle went the distance for the win, striking out four. Duncan also played well defensively at second.
In the nightcap after South Tahoe scored two runs in the fifth to tie the score 2-2, Carson scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and four in the sixth.
Jessie Sinclair hed South Tahoe scoreless until the fifth. Coyle was the winning pitcher while Jaime Good picked up the save. Conn had three hits and two runs, Duncan had three hits and three runs and Munoz had three hits and four RBI.
