The leadership students of Carson High School got dirty for the sake of cleanliness at Mills Park on Tuesday.
More than two dozen members of student government at the school cleaned up a section of the east end of the park as a community service project.
"We were originally going to go to an elementary school and do some reading with the kids, but they all have programs like that established, so we chose this instead," said Kelsey Dockery, student leadership public relations officer.
Nicole Carlevato, senior class president, organized the project.
"We picked Mills Park because it's close to the school and a lot of the kids use it, but it also helps the community because a lot of kids of all ages come here," Carlevato said.
Student Body President Jordan Nash said leadership works to not only improve the school but the community as a whole.
"The city shows us a lot of support with our athletics, and we want to show we support the community," Nash said.
The students said spending a cold afternoon picking up littered wrappers and cigarette butts is part of the process to help make their school and community better.
"I like being a leader and helping people by coming up with new ideas, and trying to make the school better for everyone," Carlevato said.
For their fall semester project the students organized and ran a Halloween party for a local day-care center.
