On a day where the defense didn't come to play, the Carson Senators showed they had enough pitching and offense to get the job done.
Carson pounded 14 hits and rode the combined two-hit pitching of Nikki Keller and Cassie Vondrak to an easy 11-2 victory over Wooster in a Sierra League softball game Thursday at Carson High School.
The win kept Carson unbeaten at 11-0 overall and 4-0 in conference. The Senators visit Wooster Saturday for a double-header at 10 a.m. and noon.
"Our pitchers are doing what they need to do," Carson coach Scott Vickrey said after the contest. "Cassie has really helped herself. She's hitting the ball real hard. Nikki is hitting the ball well, too.
"We have to tighten it (our defense) up a bit. We've been playing pretty good defense. We just had that one bad inning where the wheels came off a little bit. We have to pick it up at practice a little bit."
Christa Casci, who went 4-for-4, led off the Carson third with a single and moved to second on a single by Candice Rutledge. Abby Rankl forced Casci at third, but Dacey Hassey drilled a two-run double to give the Senators a 2-0 lead.
The Senators upped their lead to 5-0 in the fourth on two walks, an error, a sacrifice and two passed balls.
Carson exploded for four more runs in the fifth to take a 9-0 lead thanks to singles by Hassey and Daria Leid, a double by Vondrak, an error and a single by Casci.
Wooster scored its only two runs in the sixth off Vondrak, but both were unearned thanks to three Carson miscues.
Carson closed out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, as Rutledge, Hassey and Vondrak all had singles, and Wooster made one error.
Casci led Carson with four hits, Hassey added three, Rutledge, Leid and Vondrak contributed two and Rankl added one.
