Emergency firefighters sought


The Bureau of Land Management, Carson City Field Office is currently accepting applications for the emergency firefighter program. These are temporary, on-call positions that do not earn sick leave, annual leave or overtime.


Through this program the field office can support Great Basin Management Teams, shortages in the seasonal work force and shortages in the workforce during heavy fire years. Applications will be accepted through the close of business May 14. All candidates who are selected will be mailed information.




Mother's Day donors can enter to win pendant


In honor of Mother's Day, every person who donates blood at United Blood Services can enter to win a ruby and 14kt yellow gold pendant. All donors can now receive free a total cholesterol screening with each donation.

Ron Wood center to give free child seat inspections


The Ron Wood Family Resource Center is offering free child seat inspections, through a grant with the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety.


Seat inspections are by appointment only. The office is open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday and is at 212 E. Winnie Lane. Call 884-2269.




Boy Scouts to hold rummage sale


Boy Scout Troop No. 145 will be holding its 18th annual rummage sale from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at Seeliger Elementary School's gym, 2800 S. Saliman Road.


Proceeds from the sale go to offset the expenses for the scouts' summer camp and an August backpacking trip. Local businesses like Wal-Mart, Sears, Empire Ranch and Eagle Valley golf courses and Red's Old 395 Grill are providing event support, as well as local clubs such as the Kiwanis.




Douglas County


DAWG to hold Cinco de Mayo adoption event at shelter


The Douglas Animal Welfare Group will hold a Cinco de Mayo adoption event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Douglas County Animal Shelter, 921 Pine Nut Road in Gardnerville. All adoptions include a free spay or neuter and free obedience training.

Virginia City


Mountain Chili Cook-Off is this Saturday


The 25th annual Chili on the Mountain Chili Cook-Off, an International Chili Society sanctioned event, will be Saturday in Virginia City. Cooking begins at 10:30 a.m. with tasting at 12:30 p.m.


Tickets for tasting will be sold for 50 cents each; a tasting kit comes with ticket purchase.


The competitor that receives the most tickets gets the People's Choice award. There will be live mariachi music from noon-2 p.m. and a piñata every hour from noon-4 p.m.




Art exhibit on drug abuse opens Saturday


The Comstock History Center in Virginia City will host an opening reception for an art exhibit by the students of Virginia City High School on the effects of drug and alcohol abuse from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the center, 20 N. E St. Call 847-0281.
