Carson swimmers take second to Reno

It looks like the Carson and Reno High boys swim team are setting up one dramatic showdown for the Northern 4A title.

Reno's boys edged Carson for first in the High Desert League meet on Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Facility. Reno won with 448 points while Carson finished in second at 441. Carson still won the league title based on finishing unbeaten in the dual meet season and its second place finish on Saturday.

Reno also won the girls meet with 411 points. The Huskies were followed by McQueen (349), Galena (333), Spanish Springs (293) and fifth place Carson (269).

For Carson's boys, Garrett Clayton won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 2.60 seconds and John Wandel won the 100 free in 51.10 while Matt Grunert was fourth in 51.66. Clayton was also second in the 200 individual medley in 2:11.01. Alex Updegrove was fourth, Scott Wandel was fifth and Nick Schlager was sixth.

Carson finished second to Reno in all three relays. Grunert, Kevin Dyer, Clayton and Alex Updegrove was second in the 200 medley relay in 1:46.98 while Reno won in 1:45.65. In the 200 free relay, Scott Wandel, Clayton, Jacon Cornwell and John Wandel were second in 1:37.38 while Reno won in 1:33.42.

In the 400 free relay, John Wandel, Dyer, Cornwell and Grunert were second in 3:29.77 while Reno won in 3:24.47.

Also for Carson, Dyer was second in the 500 free in 5:01.21 and the 100 fly in 58.17 while Corwenll was fourth and Albert Reed was fifth, Grunert was third in the 200 free in 1:55.27, John Wandel was third in the 50 free in 23.79 and Cornwell was third in the 100 back in 1:01.52. In diving, Updegrove was second and Kurt Anderson was third.

For Carson's girls, Tatum Boehnke was second in the 500 free at 5:29.04 while Barbara Perkins was third in 5:30.02. Boehnke was third in the 100 butterfly in 1:04.48. Julie Asire was third in the 100 free in 57.14 and fourth in the 50 free in 26.38.

In addition, Perkins was second in the 200 I.M. at 2:24.38 while Danielle Judge was fifth. Boehnke, Beth Lewis, Judge and Asire were third in the 200 free relay in 1:48.56. Lewis was also fourth in the 200 free in 2:12.15.

For Galena's girls, University of Nevada-bound Kayla Mariani was a triple winner. She won the 50 free in 25.29 and the 100 backstroke in 1:01.67. Mariani, Cady Auble, Katie Pettibone and Lauren Vessie won the 200 free relay in 1:45.94 and Mariani, Alysse Ploussard, Auble and Vessie were second in the 400 free relay. Vessie was also third in the 200 free in 2:05.36.

DOUGLAS GIRLS WIN TITLE

Douglas won the Zephyr League title with 372 points while South Tahoe was second with 327 points.

Among the highlights for Dougals was Katie O'Neill, Virginia Evans, Haley Vonschottenstien and Dana Pardee winning the 200 free relay in 1:54.65 and Vonschottenstien leading a 1-2-4 finish in the 100 free. Vonschottenstein won in 1:00.49, O'Neill was second in 1:01.87 and Whitney Simpson was fourth in 1:04.84.

In the boys meet, Manogue's Ryan Hogan, who swims for the Carson Tigersharks, was a triple winner. Hogan won the 200 free in 1:58.38 and helped Manogue to wins in the 200 medley relay (1:48.63) and the 400 free relay (3;45.50).

Manogue won the boys mee with 404 points while South Tahoe was second with 343. For Manogue's girls, another Tigershark, Samantha Ashmore won the 100 breaststroke in 1:26.12.
