Edith May Herbert Mammen, 74, an eight-year resident of Carson City died May 4, 2007, from complications related to open-heart surgery.

Mrs. Mammen was born July 22, 1932, in Bismarck, N.D., to Ernest Richard Herbert and Harriet May Severance Herbert.

She married Robert Eugene Mammen on June 25, 1954, in Billings, Mont.

Mrs. Mammen grew up on remote sheep ranches in North Dakota and Montana. She rode her horse to attend school in a one-room school until she went to high school in Missoula, Mont. In 1954, she graduated from the University of Montana with a bachelor's degree in home economics. In 1979, she earned her master's in home economics from the University of Florida.

Before moving to Carson City she lived in Reno, Portland, Ore., Florida, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Michigan, Utah, Rhode Island and New Jersey.

Mrs. Mammen taught school in Portland and was the staff nutritionist at the Reno Sparks Tribal Health Center for 17 years, receiving an Honor Drum Ceremony upon retirement.

She was preceded in death by her husband and sister June Coats, of Prineville, Ore.

Among her survivors are her children Robert Scott Mammen of Reno; Steven Kent Mammen of Woodstock, Ga., Kenneth Ward Mammen of Carson City and Laurie Ann Rockenbeck of Redmond Wash.; sisters Jean Winthers of Victor, Mont., Linda Delong of Hamilton, Mont., and Sue Pitts of Roberts, Mont.; brother Sidney Herbert of Red Lodge, Mont.; and six grandchildren.
