The victim of a Fernley shooting succumbed to her injuries at about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to a news release from the Lyon County Sheriff's Department.
Lt. Rob Hall said Shelby Joanette, 36, was removed from life support.
She was shot twice in the head early Saturday morning on Farm District Road after her pickup truck became disabled.
Joanette's estranged husband, Michael Fixer Newcastle, 35, is being held in the Nye County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder. Once a Lyon County warrant is issued, Newcastle will be brought back to Fernley to face charges in the case.
According to Hall, a woman who heard the gunshots reportedly saw a vehicle matching Newcastle's leaving the scene.
Hall said officers attempted to contact Newcastle at his Las Vegas home and were unable to. When a bulletin was sent out to Nevada law enforcement agencies, officers found Newcastle heading south on Highway 95 in Beatty.
"When they stopped him, he never asked why he was being stopped," said Hall.
An unloaded 9mm handgun was taken from Newcastle's trunk. Hall said investigators recovered a 9mm shell casing from the scene of the shooting. The weapon has yet to be tested to determine if it matches the casing or Joanette's injuries.
Newcastle also goes by the name Michael Christopher Young, said Hall. According to Clark County marriage records, Joanette married Newcastle under the name of Young in 2005.
Hall said the couple was undergoing a bitter divorce and Joanette had moved to live with her parents in Fernley.
