A Virginia City High School teacher has been placed on administrative leave with pay after a student filed a complaint against him.

William Beeson, who teaches English and theater arts, was accused of allegedly improperly touching a student on April 23.

Storey County School District Superintendent Rob Slaby declined comment because he said personnel records are confidential.

Storey County Sheriff Jim Miller confirmed he has submitted a lewdness complaint to District Attorney Harold Swafford and is continuing the investigation.

The sheriff's department was first contacted about the incident May 2. Beeson has not been formally charged.

Swafford said through an assistant that he planned to ask the Nevada Attorney General's Office to take over the case.

Swafford's wife, Katie, is also a teacher in the Storey County School District, which Swafford decided presented a conflict of interest.

Beeson said in a message that he could not comment.
