Carson City's favorite auctioneer, Col. Pete Cerquitella, passed away this week. He and his wife, Mary, ran Arundel Auctions & Appraisals in this town for many, many years. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Mary and the family. Estate sales in Carson won't be the same without him.

Tom Tabacco knows we like puns, so he told us the following: "Did you hear about the LDS bishop who wrote a book on carpentry? They called him Mormon Nailer" (nobody said they had to be "good" puns).

How about those Wildcats? They won the Division 18 crown from CCSN last weekend, and now will go to Nebraska on Thursday for the regional tournament. Goooooo, Wildcats! Then did you see that Kayla Sanchez won three titles at zone this last week, too? She's one of the top runners in the COUNTRY. Not bad for little ol' Carson City. Congrats to all. And finally, in the sport's world, we know we've gotten to the big time when Regis Philbin mentions Darrell Rasner on "Regis and Kelly" as one of the top new pitchers for the New York Yankees. Geez, Reeg, we could've told you that he'd make it "years" ago. Still, it's nice to hear on national TV.

Carolyn wants to thank Ron and Josie Flippen for the delicious cheese cake (seems they made it for her "special") ... do you think anyone saved M a piece? Nooooo (sniffle, pout, whine). Maizie, however, wishes to thank Ruth Biale for putting her newspapers on her porch the other day (and she thought she wouldn't be seen) ... taking over for Linda Von Batsch, no doubt. Thanks, Ruth (and we hope you enjoyed your walk with John).

Well, we see that Jethro's is going to be in Douglas County along with all the other businesses that have gone there. Now, we're taking bets on if Max gets it built before the Ormsby House opens up? Any takers? Although we do think the OH exterior is looking quite nice these days ... the brick sidewalks are very attractive.

Has anybody heard what's going into the old Wal-Mart space? We heard warehouses, but that may just be the rumor mill working overtime. Let's add fuel to the fire ... more check cashing/payday loan places?

Kudos to the Legislature for taking up that loan issue. It makes us sick to see the commercials on TV with grinning people saying, "I've got cash in my pocket for anything I want." You'll notice nobody shows a commercial with someone crying, "I have to pay it back? With a hunk of extra money for borrowing it in the first place?" All "borrowers" should be made to read "The Merchant of Venice," before signing for loans.

Justice of the Peace Robey Willis admires his new bailiff, Tom Vasquez and his wife. They are the parents of THIRTEEN children, twelve of whom are adopted. People like that are angels on earth.

Carolyn received these from an Internet friend (we'd say the name, but she can't find it): "A lady took her 4-year-old daughter with her on her rounds to visit some elderly shut-ins. Her daughter spied a glass with some false teeth in it and whispered, 'The tooth fairy is never going to believe this.'" "Another little girl had just finished her first week of school. 'I'm just wasting my time,' she told her mother, 'I can't read, I can't write, and they won't let me talk.'" And finally, "A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy was amazed, and asked, 'Haven't you ever seen a little boy before?'"

The Pembroke Renaissance Faire is this weekend at Fuji Park. Go back in time with the lords and ladies of the medieval ages or have a lot of fun just watching and listening. And on Saturday, Wild Horse Children's Theater will hold its first "Museum Idol" competition, as well as auditions for their Project Peace touring company. Mallard's at Empire Ranch is sponsoring a "Couples Dinner League" every other Friday (alternating with Eagle Valley) ... shotgun start at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7:30 p.m. for $70 per couple. Call 885-2100 for sign ups and details. The first week was a great success. And we would both like to thank Sandra and Dwight Millard for sharing dinner when we walked in unannounced. They couldn't have been nicer.

We see where 28 percent of the state's budget goes to prisons, at a cost of about $40,000 per prisoner each year. Let's see, that's three squares a day, a bed, heating, air conditioning, school, medical, and so forth ... all for breaking the law. Too bad the poor bloke on the street has to work, pay for rent, food, gasoline, and all the rest of his living expenses, so that he can pay taxes to support the ne'er-do-wells living off our largesse. Where's Joe Arpaio when you need him? And education gets the short shrift.

From Bob Herzog we get the following golfing saga: "On their honeymoon, the husband told his new bride, 'I have a confession to make. I'm a golfer. I'll be on the course most days of the week, and, if it comes to a choice between you and golf, golf wins.' She ponders a moment, then says, 'Well, there's something you should know about me. I'm a hooker.' 'No problem,' he says, 'just widen your stance, overlap your grip, and it should clear right up.'"

If you're bothered by allergies this year, get some LOCAL honey from a health food store, mix it with some cinnamon, and have it every day (a tablespoon or two) on toast or in a cup of warm liquid. (NOT for children under 3 years old). Might help. Achooo.
