We congratulate the WNCC Wildcats baseball team that won the Scenic West Athletic Conference title Friday. If you haven't been following the team, you're missing something special.
In just its second season, this team has shown it's worthy of your attention and enthusiasm. The conference postseason crown they won last week is the next step following their conference regular season title in its first year.
It's even more intriguing now that they are playing as underdogs, finishing the conference in third place with a 25-15 record. But, in dramatic fashion, they polished off rival College of Southern Nevada, which was a heavy favorite after winning the conference.
Baseball doesn't get any better than that, and when you consider the manner in which they won Thursday's game, it has the makings of a dream season. WNCC's Stephen Sauer came on in the ninth with the bases loaded, no outs and a tenuous 6-4 lead. He struck out the side.
Next, they advance to the district championship beginning Thursday in Nebraska for the right to play in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association World Series.
The odds may be long, but don't count them out.
WNCC coach D.J. Whittemore said: "We probably failed more than anybody in our position right now. That's what makes it satisfying. We feel like we have the best chemistry in the country."
