The public is welcome to attend a Shavuot service and cheesecake bake-off at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Temple Bat Yam, 3260 Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe.
That evening marks the beginning of Shavuot, the holiday commemorating when the Jewish people received the Torah, which included the Ten Commandments from Moses at Mount Sinai.
The celebration is an interactive experience filled with discussion and discovery, sounds and images, following the Jewish tradition of seeing the faith's holiest text, the Torah, as a source for reflection, thought and wisdom.
The annual cheesecake bake-off is after the service, as the Temple continues with the tradition of eating dairy foods on Shavuot. Because the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai was known as a time of milk and honey, it became a tradition to eat only dairy foods during the celebration.
The cheesecakes will be judged and available for everyone to taste. Anyone can bring a cheesecake for the bake-off competition.
