Senator Square

The CHS Biology River Trail officially opened Wednesday evening. The trail was designed and built by Julie Koop's biology students and Boy Scout troop 16.

The students also wrote an interpretive trail pamphlet that guides you through the area. The trail is about a mile long and has 12 posts where hikers can stop and learn. Koop hopes the community and schools will use it, as well as care for the area.

It is a gift to the community and many people helped with the project. Carson City Parks and Recreation approved it and have supported the building and maintenance for the new trail. Mr. Hensler, a retired woodshop teacher from Eagle Valley Middle School numbered and cut the posts. Mark Kimbrough has been a mentor to Julie Koop for more than eight years, without his help and guidance none of this would have been possible.

The artwork for the sign was done by Kim Winder, and the hawk on the trail guide was done by Jennifer Adams. The trail is located at Ambrose Nature Area on Deer Run Road, about two miles south of Highway 50.

The annual Salute to Scholars program, where seniors who are receiving scholarships are recognized, will be held in Senator Square on Thursday evening at 7.

Many of our community members who so generously offer scholarships to our students attend in order to present their scholarship awards during this event. Salute to Scholars is open to the public.

The ROTC ball was held at the Plaza Convention Center recently. Many were in attendance, including a number of award presenters from the community. The king was Jose Anaya, and the queen was Chelsea Milburn. Other awards given to graduating NJROTC seniors are as follows:

Tim Chatwood - $500 Savings Bond from the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans.

Trace Evans - $500 Savings Bond from the Silver State Detachment, Marine Corps League

Jamie Greene - $500 Savings Bond from the American Legion High Desert Post 56; The Commander Brogan $500 Scholarship from the Carson City Council, Navy League of the United States

Jeremiah Neidert - $500 Savings Bond from the American Legion Capitol Post 4

Katelyn O'Higgins - $500 Savings Bond from the Carson City Council, Navy League of the United States

Chad Shroy - $950 Gilliam Award-National NJROTC scholarship, leadership plaque from the Carson City Council, Navy League of the United States.

Andrew Stephenson - $1,000 scholarship from the Carson City Chapter, Military Officers Association of America.

Students at school are busy raising money for sophomore student Cesar Hernandez, who is in need of a kidney transplant. A walk-a-thon was held Saturday in which the students raised more than $500. The family needs more than $100,000 for Cesar's transplant. Many of the students continue to fund raise in the community. If you can help, please contact Kelly Hogan, teacher at CHS, at 283-1734.

Another student at CHS, Jared Dempsey is in need of a new wheelchair lift and van. Students and staff are also accepting donations to help his family defer the cost of this equipment. If you can help, please contact Travis Dressler, teacher at CHS, at 283-1700.

Thanks to the community that has supported CHS in all of our activities this year. If you haven't caught Senator Pride yet, you will next year. This is our last column for this school year, but look for us again in September. The first home football game is Aug. 24 against Mojave High from Las Vegas. See you at the game!
