RENO - The medal haul wasn't great, but Carson High swim coach Monica Weaver was proud of the effort her boys squad put forth at Saturday's NIAA State Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Nevada.

Sophomore Kevin Dyer won the only individual medal when he finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:57.18. The Senators' quartet of John and Scott Wandel, Alex Updegrove and Matt Grunert took fourth in the 200-yard free relay, clocking a personal-best of 1:33.61.

Those two efforts paved the way for a sixth-place team finish with 33 points. Reno (110 points) won the title, followed by Palo Verde (66), Centennial (49), Boulder City (44) and Coronado (42).

On the girls' side, Coronado (97) won the title followed by Reno (79), McQueen (55), Sierra Vista (44) and Galena (43).

"I felt the kids did really well," Weaver said. "They (200 relay team) did great. It was their best time of the season. Individually, the kids were right at their best times. They placed where they came in or went up. I was hoping for a top four (team finish)."

Carson, quite simply, didn't have the numbers to do that. The Senators only had seven swimmers, and they would have had to medal in all the relay events to have a chance to crack the top five.

Dyer found himself in seventh-place after the first three laps of the 500 free. Over the next three laps, he moved up into fifth. The Carson standout climbed into fourth on the seventh lap, and held his spot the rest of the way.

"It felt good," Dyer said. "It wasn't my best (time). I did my best, and I'm happy with that. I always start out slow and come back. I made up more ground than I usually do."

Dyer also made the finals in the 100 butterfly. He was seeded eighth and finished eighth, clocking a 56.88.

Dyer went out in 27.03, but was two seconds slower over the final 50 meters.

"If I'd taken it out faster, I could have been seventh," Dyer said. "I probably should have taken it out a little faster."

Dyer also was part of Carson's 200-yard medley relay squad, which finished fifth in 1:44.89. Jacob Cornwell, Garrett Clayton and John Wandel were part of that squad. Cornwell also swam the 200 free, finishing eighth. Clayton picked up some points for Carson when he finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke.

The Carson boys also grabbed a seventh place in the 400 free relay team.

The Galena girls, led by Kayla Mariani, had a huge day in the pool.

Mariani was third in the 100 back, clocking a 59.27. She also placed fifth in the 50 free with a 24.91. The Galena senior also swam the anchor leg on the Grizzlies' winning 200 free relay and the anchor leg on the 400 free relay team which finished fifth in 3:46.64.

Cady Auble finished third in the 100 free, clocking a 54.82. She also swam on the 200 and 400-free relay teams.

"I couldn't be happier with our relay team," Galena coach Amanda Drossulis said. "We pulled it out."
