Alice Walker

Alice Walker, 81, a 14-year Minden resident, died March 26, 2007, while visiting with her children in Hawaii. She was born Alice Nides on Jan. 5, 1926, to Sara and Emanuel Nides in Philadelphia, Penn.

She grew up in Philadelphia and New York City, and then moved to California as a young woman. There she met Alvin Walker, and they married Jan. 23, 1953. During their 52 years together they lived in La Mirada and Bishop, Calif., New Jersey, Wyoming, Arizona, and finally Minden.

Mrs. Walker was a homemaker and also worked clerical jobs after her children were grown. She worked part-time until November keeping membership records for the Nevada State Railroad Museum. In her youth she enjoyed horseback riding. With her husband she enjoyed square dancing, skiing and family camping trips. In later years she had fun bowling, playing card games and video poker. She was an active volunteer with the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Family Support Council and local amateur radio associations.

She was preceded in death by her husband Nov. 27, 2004. Among her survivors are her daughter, Diane DeCoster of Florida; son and daughter-in-law, John and Cindy Walker of Washington; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Larry Henig of California and Hawaii; grandchildren Camiel and Jessica DeCoster, Laurie and Melissa Walker, and Lyla and Stefan Dorsett; great-grandchildren Elisa Grace DeCoster and Julia Claire Petrano; and sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Edward Jardines of Florida. She leaves many dear friends in Nevada and California.

Arrangements were handled by Cremation Services of West Hawaii. Her ashes were scattered in the mountains near Carson Valley. Memorial donations, in her name, may be made to a favorite charity.
