More than 70 vehicles waited for Blue Lakes Road to open

BISHOP, CALIF. AREA: Gary Olson of the Bishop Creek Resorts (760-873-4484):

Intake No. 2: Was great again. Power Bait and worms seem best. Good action with Panther Martins.

North Lake: Good reports for fishing with orange Power Bait and mini-jigs with a mealworm.

South Lake: Nightcrawlers still seem to be the best, either by casting or just trolling along with a small split shot about 5 ft. up the line. Casting Thomas Buoyant or the red neon Roostertail. We are getting lots of good reports trolling olive Matukas and Woolly Worms.

Bishop Creek: A 3-pound, 14-ounce Alper's rainbow on Power Bait.

BISHOP, CALIF. AREA:

Sabrina Lake: Patti Apted of the Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425): Colton Fiscus (13 years old) of Angles Camp caught a nice 3.5 pounder on a worm, while Tracy Redding of Riverside brought in a 5.25 pound Alper's on Power Bait and float tuber Cathy McClain Phillips of Granada Hills had a bit of a thrill ride landing a 4.25 pound Alper's on a Lip Ripper.

BLUE LAKES AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930): The road opened at noon on Friday and there were in excess of 70 vehicles, lined up and waiting for that opening. It was a mad house, up there, all weekend.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF: Jim Reid of Ken's Sporting Goods Store (760-932-7707) (www.kenssport.com): Has been windy in the afternoons. The fishing has not busted loose yet. There was a 5.9 pound rainbow on Sunday on a nightcrawler from a boat.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported one angler fishing from the dam caught small trout, using Power Bait.

CARSON RIVERS, CALIF: Were planted by Alpine County on Wednesday and by Calif. F&G on Friday for the holiday weekend.

East Carson River: Todd Sodaro and Chad Machado of the Carson River Resort (877-694-2229): Fishing last weekend was the best I've ever seen here. Joshua Hammitt, age 6, of Galt, Calif. caught a 4-pounder and a 3.2 pounder. His sister, Victoria, age 8, caught a 4.9 pounder. Their fish were caught on nightcrawlers on May 27. Sumer Boling of Rancho Cordova caught a 3.8, a 3.5, a 3.5 and a 2.8 on red Salmon eggs.

West Carson River: Gene St. Denis of South Lake Tahoe: My son, Eric, 12 years old, and his mom (Barbara) fished in the Hope Valley. Eric caught three planters, and one of them was 5 pounds.

West Carson River: Dave Kirby: The river had a plant of 1,000 pounds of rainbows on Wednesday by Alpine County. There were lots of people at every hole where they planted. Those holes are probably fished out by now.

West Carson River: Renie Busey of Douglas caught two 3.2 pound rainbows over the weekend.

CONVICT LAKE, CALIF: Launa Strickland at the Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260): The biggest rainbows were: 5-pounds, 3-ounces on yellow Power Bait from the south shore, 4-pounds, 11-ounces on a Crocodile lure from the north shore, 4-pounds, 4-ounces on a Thomas Buoyant lure from the north shore and 4-pounds, 2-ounces on a Trout Teaser from the south shore.

CROWLEY LAKE AREA, CALIF: Steve Osterman of Performance Anglers of Mammoth Lakes (760) 924-2181:

Crowley Lake: Fishing has been good in Hilton Bay, McGee Bay and the north arm. The fish are beginning to move into shallower water. Try Stevie's Wonder (gray/black) and Stevie's "Z" in 9-10 feet of water. Olive or black Woolly Buggers fished on full sink lines also working well.

Hot Creek: Water flow is 23 CFS. The creek is fishing very well and fly selection remains the same. Try small Brassies, Scud's, Baetis Nymphs and Pheasant Tails. Also a larger dry fly like a Stimulator with a Zebra Midge or Emerger trailer is a good choice. Some yellow Sallies beginning to show.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF: Ed Dillard (Dillard Guided Fishing) (530-832-6394) reported: Trolling has been very slow. I fished three hours on Monday with just 3 Pike. We spent most of the day, catfishing. We had 30 catfish.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF: Dan Dutuslu, age 53, and his son Dan, age 11, of the Portola, Calif. area caught 6 catfish on worms from shore on Sunday afternoon. The lake was very rough due to very windy conditions. It was the first time that the father had fished since his high school days, back in Romania.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot, Calif. (530-993-4683): Fly fishing has been good with red bead-head Midges. Try bank fishing in the coves at Crystal or Lunker Points.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF: Steven Osterman: Current flow in Rush Creek is 118 CFS. Try Pheasant Tail Nymphs, flash back Hares Ears and black ants. Silver Lake and Grant Lake have been the best bet for float tubers. Black Mohair Leeches, olive Matukas and Zonkers.

KINNEY RESERVOIR, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported: The road is open and the ice is gone. One angler limited out at the reservoir. The next day, he hiked into Upper and Lower KInney Lakes where he caught 3 brookies.

LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV: Missy at Burke's Market at Silver Springs (775-577-2750): I'm estimating that there were 20,000 people. There were huge crowds everywhere. Lots of people were fishing and the fishing was awesome, especially on Monday.

Lots of Wipers. There was a Channel Catfish over 30 inches long and a Largemouth Bass that was 2.5 pounds.

MAMMOTH LAKES, CALIF: Steven Osterman: All the lakes in the loop are open. DF&G has not stocked the lakes basin so fishing opportunities are limited to the wild fish and hold over stocked fish.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF: Steven Osterman:

Upper: Water flow about 109 CFS. San Juan worms, Glo-Bugs, Pheasant Tails and Hares Ears. Some surface action with BWO'S mid-day. Caddis in the afternoon.

Lower: Water flow is 299 CFS. Fishing is pretty tough now, due to the high flows.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF: Dave Jacobs/Hank Mautz (Professional Guide Service) (800-355-3113):

Rainbows: With river releases on the rise, this past week offered some very good wild rainbow fishing for anglers from either a drift boat or jet boat. Side drifting small hand tied Glo Bugs in various egg color patterns proved best early in the mornings. Natural cured roe tipped with a Quickie puffball also scored some great fishing for wild rainbows. Most averaged 1-3 pounds with the occasional large rainbow 4-5 pounds. 25 hook-ups are average with better scores of 40 plus hook-ups possible on good days. Redding to Red Bluff has been most productive water. Angler's back trolling small Hot Shot No. 50's in various color combos has also been a good bet.

Shad: Fishing is starting in the upper reaches near Chico, and should improve with the recent water rise. Side drifting small jigs with small curly tailed grubs is best. Fishing will continue to build now through June, up river towards Red Bluff.

SILVER LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported two anglers fished four days from shore and limited out each day on rainbows, up to 2.5 pounds.

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552): Lots of boats on the lake over the weekend. We have been trolling 50-240 feet deep. We locate the fish on the fish finder and then troll in a "Figure Eight" pattern, bouncing the bottom. I've been fishing at Cal-Neva, Dollar Point and Sugar Pine Points. We are catching 3-8 fish per trip (6-18 pounds), all Mackinaw trout, no browns.

LAKE TAHOE - South Shore: Gene St. Denis: Fishing has been good early in the mornings. I've been fishing 50-200 feet deep at Ski Run Shelf. Trolling with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and minnows. Bouncing off the bottom in a serpentine pattern. We caught browns 5-7 pounds and Mackinaw 7-14 pounds.

TOPAZ LAKE: Chuck and Linda Fields at the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550): Last weekend was the less amount of people that I've seen in my 15 years out here. Not that many fishermen, water skiers and jet skis. I think it is probably due to a combination of high gas prices and the Topaz Lodge being closed. The trollers (Needlefish lures) and still fishermen (nightcrawlers) did good at the south end for fish averaging 1.5 pounds. One fisherman from shore caught and released about 9 large-sized black bass with the largest being 7.1 pounds.

TRUCKEE RIVER, NEV: Andy at The Gilly Sporting Goods Store: Flows are low. Fishing is OK. There is a Caddis and Mosquito hatch late in the afternoon. Fish behind the riffles.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF: Jim Reid reported fishing is excellent. Water is still chilly. Bait fishermen doing the best, followed by fly fishermen in float tubes and spincasters coming in third.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF: Jim Reid reported:

East Walker: Fishing is still excellent. Mostly with Caddis or Mayfly patterns.

West Walker: Is hit and miss. Water is pretty good but still cold.

East Walker: Steve Osterman reported: The flow is currently 101 CFS. The lower water flow means fewer good spots to fish and competition is high. Prince Nymphs, WD-40's, flashback Pheasant Tails, sparkle Caddis Pupa, Stimulators and Caddis.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR, NEV: Dennis Dunn, Mark and Scott at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472: Fishing was good over the holiday. Lots of perch. They were catching rainbows from shore and boats. Catfish has been good if you want to stay up until 2 a.m.
