RENO - The all-WAC team was announced Friday night, and there was one huge omission.
Nevada's Konrad Schmidt, who hit .364 and drove in 46 runs, was left off the first and second-team lists.
The omission was a reflection of two hard tags that Schmidt put on opposing baserunners in games against Fresno State and Louisiana Tech, both of which earned him ejections.
"I knew that was coming," Schmidt said as he walked onto the field prior to Thursday's tournament opener. "It's just a piece of paper."
MCKIMMY LIFTS SPARTANS
Marcus McKimmy was inserted into the lead-off spot recently, and not surprisingly, that's when the Spartans started to play better offensively.
McKimmy reached base five times. scoring twice, collecting two hits and driving in a run.
"I'm just trying to set the table early," McKimmy said. "Me and Tico (Chris Balatico) are just trying to put pressure on the pitcher and then he has to worry about the 3-4-5 hitters. I run the bases well, and I just want to score runs and let other guys do the damage."
SIEWERT HURT
Shortstop Chris Siewert was hit by a pitch in the second inning, and was eventually replaced by ex-Fallon star Owen Mackedon in the fourth.
Mackedon was 1-for-1 with a run-scoring double and a sacrifice bunt. He handled two fielding chances flawlessly.
"He is having his hand x-rayed tonight," Nevada coach Gary Powers said. "He was having a hard time swinging the bat. I had to take him out of the game."
THE MEN IN BLUE
All six of the umpires working in this week's tournament - Danny Mascarro, Joe Burleson, David Rogers, Chuck Lyon, Steve Mattingly and Bill Speck - have all been assigned to a Regional or Super Regional.
Both Massacre and Rogers will work the upcoming College World Series in Omaha. It will be Mascarro's fourth trip to the CWS and the second for Rogers.
NOTABLES
Dye was ejected by first-base umpire Steve Mattingly after grounding out in the ninth ...
