Carson City Historical Society photo Greg Hansen, who works at the Greenhouse Garden Center, has opened the garden of his 1844 N. Nevada St. home for the Through the Garden Gate home and garden tour on Sunday - he's dubbed it "The House with the Blue Door."
The Carson City Historical Society and Carson City Redevelopment will present Through the Garden Gate, a Victorian Home and Garden Tour from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets are $10. Children under 6 are free.
Nine locations on the tour include the newly renovated Adams House, Kreb Peterson House (built in 1914 by a prominent surgeon, Ernest T. Krebs, and featured in the movie, "The Shootist," actor John Wayne's last movie), the Douglas Mansion, the Roberts House Museum (home of the Carson City Historical Society), Greenhouse Garden Center, David Smaill House (home of White Cat Antiques), Hardest-Ballardino Garden at Lakeview, Bliss Mansion, and the Chartz House, according to Susan Ballew, president of the Carson City Historical Society.
Some of the homes featured are Registered National Historic Places for the state of Nevada. Each of the homes is known for its historic significance, unique gardens and ponds. For instance, the Adams House has a rose garden and was built in the 1920's. The Smaill House was built in 1862, before Nevada was a state.
"I love these tours because they give everyone an opportunity to view our community's living history through these homes," said Dorothy Dolan, coordinator of the event. "The people who open their homes are so gracious. It is helpful to learn about and get a deeper understanding of the origins of Carson City."
The Victorian Home and Garden show takes place twice a year (summer and winter) since 1969. Proceeds from the tour will be utilized for the restoration of the Roberts House and for the Carriage House Project.
Musical entertainment will play throughout the tour with Mary Law, harpist; Chris Bayer, banjo and the Barbershop Quartette.
