Sam's Best Bets for upcoming entertainment

Some suggestions for this weekend and next couple of weeks around Carson City. Check entries in the daily Nevada Appeal for more details, but this should be enough for planning this weekend and the next couple.

"Guys and Dolls" staged by the college musical group plays at the Community Center starting Friday. This is one of the grand musicals of old Broadway and well worth your bucks. Dates are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Don't miss this one, the musical theater company does a fine job. Two great songs (among many) are "If I Were a Bell" and "Sit Down, You're rockin the Boat."

"Wonder of the World," is staged by the Proscenium Players this weekend. Based on a short story by Damon Runyon, it tells the story of Sister Sarah of The Salvation Army meeting Sky Masterson of the New York gambling subculture. The trio number, "Fugue for Tinhorns" is a fugue all about which horse is going to win a race. Two fine songs, "If I Were a Bell" and "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat," are showstoppers. "Dolls" plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Community Center, 851 E. William St. and at 2 p.m. Sunday there as well.

Silver Legacy Resort Casino in Reno has announced the postponement of the Julio Iglesias show set for Nov. 9. A new date will be announced and all tickets for the November 9 show will honored for the new date.

PBS part three of a six-part series about a woman newly elected prime minister is a sort of fluke election. It's really worth your time if you like reasonably literate TV fare. It plays Sunday night on Channel 5 (or 29 for off-the-air antenna reception). Roz is the new PM and she's already faced her first crisis. Now she has to finger out how to fun a government.

Celtic harpist and storyteller Patrick Ball comes to Carson City after a long absence, bringing with his Celtic music and in this case his new solo theater piece, "The Fine Beauty of the Island" Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. This is not a kids show, despite the setting. It's for all ages. Tickets are $15 for general public and $12 for students and members of the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada and or Wild Horse Productions. Tickets can be purchased at the Museum, 813 N. "The Nerd," produced by The Dakota Organization, will be presented Nov. 8, 9, 10 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 10 and 11 at 2 p.m. at the CVIC Hall in Minden at Esmeralda and 4th Street. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for seniors (55 and older), and youths (17 and younger) and groups (8 or more). "Fragments of Latin America," a collection of photographs by Western Nevada College Graphic Communications instructor Jayna Conkey, will hang in the College Gallery through Nov. 29. The exhibit features digital photographs from Mexico, Panama, Ecuador, Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. For information contact 445-3000.

The Brewery Arts Center and X-Ville South present the folk legend Peter Rowan with Jody Stecher in Carson City Nov. 4. The show will open with local favorite guitarist Beans Sousa. Rowan used to sing for the all-star Bluegrass band Old and in the Way, as well as the folk-rock outfit Sea Train. Today Rowan is dipping into stripped-down country-folk songs composed of just his voice, guitar and harmonica. Rowan is joined by two-time Grammy nominated Jody Stecher, a multi-instrumentalist playing on a multitude of stringed instruments " including fiddle, guitar, mandolin and banjo. Opening the show is Beans Sousa. Throughout the '70s, '80s, and '90s, Sousa spent his 30-year career performing, recording, traveling the country and playing music with influential musicians. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $28 all seating, with $3 off BAC members, seniors and students. Call 883-1976.

SPARKS " With commercial success in pop, adult contemporary, R&B, country and Latin, Sheena Easton has earned the reputation as one of the most versatile vocalists of the 1980s. Catch Easton Saturday Nov. 10, in the Celebrity Showroom at John Ascuaga's Nugget. Easton has developed a steady acting career, with more than a dozen movie titles to her credit. The next concerts of the Reno Chamber Orchestra are Saturday Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. and Sunday Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. at the University of Nevada, Reno's Nightingale Concert Hall. Music Director Theodore Kuchar conducts a program featuring Ravel's "Mother Goose" Ballet and the Symphony No. 85 by Haydn. Pianist Meng-Chieh Liu will be soloist in Faure's "Ballade" and the Piano Concerto No. 1 by Shostakovich. Tickets are at 348-9413 or at RenoChamberOrchestra.org. Recipient in 2002 of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, pianist Meng-Chieh Liu has performed all over the world, including numerous television and radio broadcasts.

Open Mic night from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday at Comma Coffee. Sign ups start at 7:30 p.m. Jen Scaffidi hosts this event. Jazz for Youth 7 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Comma Coffee. This is an opportunity for talented young musicians to sit in with and learn from professional musicians.

The Carson City Music Club will present "10,000 Years of Hornblowing" at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Brewery Arts Center, 511 W. King St. Dan Ballard will be featured tracing the history of hornblowing from primitive animal horns to modern brass instruments. For information contact 882-9517.
