Many ways to recognize veterans this holiday

Note: Veterans Day is traditionally observed Nov. 11, but this year Monday is the federal holiday.

Today

Veterans Day flag display at Eagle Valley Middle School, students from Brian Wallace's class will be completing a flag display which will remain up all weekend. The school is at 4151 E. Fifth St.

Dayton Intermediate School honors veterans with an outdoor display. Students will be placing Veterans Day projects along the fence throughout the day. The display will be up all weekend. The school is at 315 Old Dayton Valley Road.

Carson City Elks Lodge No. 2177 will celebrate the U.S. Marine Corps birthday with a Veterans Spaghetti Dinner 5-7 p.m. at the Carson City Elks Lodge, 515 N. Nevada St. Free to veterans and active service members. A minimum donation of $6 is requested of all others. Donations will benefit Meals on Wheels for Veterans. Call 882-2177.

A Tribute to our Nation's Veterans, 9 a.m., Dayton Cemetery. Presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8660, American Legion Post 56, and BSA Venturing Crew. Honor Guard of the American Legion Post 56 presents a 21-gun salute and will play taps. Call 246-9374.

Annual Virginia City Veterans Day Parade, down C Street, beginning at 11 a.m. Virginia City will honor grand marshal Glenn Tierney of Carson City, a retired Naval commander who served in World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. He was also a test pilot who worked on the first Sidewinder guided missile system. Parade forms to the Historic Fourth Ward School on the South End of C Street at 10 a.m. Call 847-4768. Veterans Day ceremony, Lone Mountain Cemetery, 3 p.m., 1044 Beverly Drive. Gen. William Passmore Carlin Camp 25 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will hold a short service and wreath laying at the Custer Post 5 Grand Army of the Republic Civil War monument. Call 972-7420.

All military personnel, active and retired, and their families will receive free admittance to any national park in honor of Veterans Day. Fee waiver applies to entrance fees only. Some parks might also waive other fees on an individual basis.
