Holiday season brings accolades, senior projects start

As we enter the holiday season, things at Carson High really start happening.

All kinds of fun and exciting events will take place over the next six weeks as the semester draws to a close. Amidst all the great things happening, our students will be working hard in the classroom and getting ready for the semester final exams.

This week has many events for the students, staff, and community to be involved with, including the Academic Letter Ceremony and the NHS Blood Drive on Wednesday. The Academic Letter Ceremony will be at 7 p.m. in Senator Square.

The annual CHS Craft Faire will be 5 -8:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Come out support CHS and get some of your holiday shopping done. There will be crafters, food and entertainment both days.

The 86th annual National American Education Week will be celebrated across the country, beginning today.

The CHS staff will be enjoying treats provided by different campus clubs all week, along with a breakfast on Wednesday morning. The community has donated various items to be raffled off for the hard-working staff at Carson High. We would like to thanks all of the businesses who contributed!

The 2007-08 senior projects are off to a running start with letters of intent submitted for committee approval.

The seniors' next step is to complete their project proposals. All of these forms are now available at www.carsonhigh.com under the senior project heading. The deadlines for projects are also on the Web site.

To fund senior project awards and special activities, the senior project committee will be selling used books, CDs and DVDs at the Craft Fair.

Carson High is especially proud of the girls cross-country team for winning the Nevada State Championship, and congratulations go out to them and all student athletes that participated in fall sports.

Good luck to all who will be participating in the winter sports, and we encourage the community to come out and enjoy Carson High sports this winter.

Congratulations also go to Elise Sala, who has been selected for the Western Regional High School Honor Choir sponsored by the American Choral Directors Association.

Only the best 150 students from high schools in Arizona, Nevada, Utah, California and Hawaii are selected for the Honor Choir, via audition. Elise is one of only 17 students from Nevada selected for this accolade. She will travel to Anaheim, Calif., in April to rehearse and perform at the convention.

Elise is a member of the CHS Chamber Singers, Capitol Stars and Concert Choir. She takes private lessons with area voice teacher Judy Monson, who sponsored her in this event.

Speaking of singing, the CHS Barbershop Quartets and the Concert Choir have been asked to perform with the "Chorus of the Comstock" Barbershop Chorus Christmas Show. The show is at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Carson Community Center.

The Chorus of the Comstock sponsored a barbershop quartet last year as part of a senior project. Since the remaining boys continued it this year, the Chorus sponsored them to attend a "Youth in Harmony" camp, where the boys learned barbershop skills, and they will be sending them to the Far West competition this spring.

The Christmas show will feature several regionally known adult quartets as well as several high school groups.

Finally, Carson Performing Arts presents "The Nick of Time Christmas Show" Dec. 7-9 and 14-16, at the Brewery Arts Center. This should be a fun holiday show, complete with a visit from Santa!
