CHS clubs searching for blood, motivation, scuba gear and talent

The National Honor Society held the fall blood drive on Thursday. Last year the organization was recognized as the top Northern Nevada high school for donations of viable blood units in a school year.

After Thursday's blood drive, they are well on their way to retaining that position as 169 units were collected compared to the 117 units collected last year.

The CHS chapter of NHS will be recognized on Monday at a luncheon in Reno by the United Blood Services for their accomplishments in blood donations and will be holding the next blood drive in January.

Also, NHS just returned from the National Conference in Atlanta, Ga., where five members competed in the National Scholar's Bowl placing in the top 20.

Members of the team were Rob Valerius, Jenna Duralde, Callie Ward, Josh Barbie, and Heidi Flansberg. Among those members, a special award was given to Callie Ward for placing second among all participants in the prequalifiying exam for the literature/English test.

Misty Harris, Link Crew sponsor, took 30 Link Crew students to a regional conference in Vacaville, Calif., Friday. Students were able to meet with other Link Crew trained schools and exchange ideas and learn new things about mentoring incoming freshman.

A presentation by motivational speaker Patrick Mauer focused on the importance of leadership among high school students. Link Crew students do so much to acclimate new freshman to the regiment of high school as well as to support the entire student body in campus activities.

Adriene Garbiel is the new Oceanography teacher at CHS. She and her students are starting a scuba program and are asking for any community donations for used or new equipment including masks, snorkels, fins, booties and gloves for students who are participating in this program. The CHS Concert Choir was invited to perform as the Nevada State Representative Choir in Washington, D.C., in June 2008 as part of the Music Educators National Conference "National Anthem Project."

One high school choir from each of the 50 states is invited to attend and perform together as one mass choir. In addition to the combined singing of our National Anthem, each choir is asked to perform on their own at a variety of historic sites and monuments around our nation's capitol.

An official letter from the governor of each state and attendance at the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps will round out this great honor.

The CHS video production classes, taught by Brian Reedy, are preparing for a trip to a national video productions conference in Southern California.

To raise money to attend this event, they are putting on a CHS talent show at the Community Center on Nov. 28. Come out and support staff and students as they help raise money for this conference.
