Carson runners strong at Washoe

The Carson High boys and girls cross country teams continued to show improvement heading into another high-power meet this weekend.

Carson competed for the second time this year on the Washoe Lake State Park course on Wednesday, covering the 3.1-mile course through the beach and the water. And most of the Senators improved their times from their last effort on the course in a meet with Damonte Ranch and Hug.

The Senator boys beat Hug 17-47 and Damonte Ranch 26-32 while the Carson girls beat Hug 17-46. Damonte's girls didn't have a full team.

Carson's boys weren't running at full strength Caleb Carter and Nick Schlager were both nursing injuries and just jogged the course. Wade Smith also didn't run with a hamstring injury.

Richard Shroy won the boys race in 16 minutes, 38 seconds, a 45-second improvement over the last time he ran the course. Logan Philippi continued to show improvement as he's earning a spot on the varsity. He finished third in 17:36, which was a 50-secod improvement over the last time he ran the course.

"He's showed great improvement really throughout the whole year," Carson coach Pete Sinnott said. "He gets better each week."

Zack Mapes showed an improvement of 45 seconds in finishing in 18:08 and Ethan Graber finished in 18:37. Also for Cason, Brandon Bournacorsi showed a five-minute improvement.

Other finishes for Carson were David McMasters, 19:50, Tyler Davies, 19:30, Andrew Richards, 20:41, Jonathan Lanuza, 21:50, Joe Ward, 21:49, Noel Lopez, 23:17 and Josiah Toral, 22:02.

For the girls, Yvonne Hollett showed a 45-second improvement in winning in 19:48. Jenny Mital showed a 10-second improvement in taking second in 20:37, Christy Works was third in 21:00 and Amanda Gordon was fifth in 21:59.

Also for Ccarson, Gloria Sosa finished in 22:19, Haley Ward finished in 22:48, Kristen Dockery finished in 22:59, Kat Vonrumpf finished in 22:02 and Sarah Reiter finished in 21:31. "All the kids did really well," Sinnott said.

Carson will compete on Saturday in the high-powered Clovis (Calif.) Invitational.
