Democrat delegate numbers finalized for caucuses

Nevada Democrats will elect a total of 10,446 delegates when they hold their presidential caucuses Jan. 19.

The delegate total was determined by state law and a spokesman said it reflects the state's growing diversity. Kirsten Searer of the state party said nearly half the total will come from precincts with at least 25 percent minority population.

On caucus day, Democrats statewide will meet in their precincts and elect delegates who represent the presidential candidates they support. The percentage of delegates each candidate receives will be announced after the caucuses.

Those delegates will represent their precinct voters at the county conventions in February.

Nevada's caucuses are among the first in the nation, which is expected to help draw attention to the state and visits from the major Democratic candidates.
