Golden Throne repeats as Outhouse Race champion

The Golden Throne flushed the competition for the second year in a row at the World Championship Outhouse Races in Virginia City on Sunday.

Randy Dias of San Jose, spokesman for the Kung Poo Fighters, who entered the outhouse, said it's a combination of things that leads to the fastest privy of them all.

"I'd say it's a little of everything," he said. "You have to have explosive runners, a driver that can keep it straight and an outhouse that's lightweight."

Dias expected to be challenged this year.

"I know they were coming back to get us this year," he said. "There was a lot of pressure to repeat."

The team, sponsored by United Site Services, of San Jose, Calif., and Reno, also won top honors in the 2006 races.

The Golden Throne won first place in the Best Overall category, the Modern category and was voted Prettiest outhouse by race spectators.

The Ole Tyme Classic, entered by Joe Ramsey of Reno's Ole Tyme Saloon, won second place in the Best Overall category and the Modern category.

The Urinator, the Ole Tyme Saloon's second outhouse, took third place in the Modern category.

The Party Pooper, entered by Philthy Phil Johnson, of Rough and Ready, Calif., won the top prize in the Classic category. It also won third place for Best Overall and for the fifth year in a row was judged the Ugliest outhouse.

A newcomer, the Haunted Outhouse, entered by Matt Tilley, of Dayton, won second place in the Classic category and was voted Most Unusual by race fans.

Tilley said he plans to be back next year with a sleeker design.

"We're going to run it through a planer and change it from 1Ú2 inch thick to 1Ú4 inch thick," he said.

Another first timer, Marvin Mattson, of Reno, came in third in the Classic category with the Oshiri, a Japanese-themed pagoda style outhouse. Oshiri is the Japanese word for "butt," he said.

"We have a Taiko group and I thought it was natural to do a Japanese theme," he said.

Mattson also plans a return in 2008.

"We enjoyed it, it was fun, with good company," he said.
