Carson High offering opportunity to learn about career choices

The Carson High Speech and Debate team is already under way for the 2007-08 school year.

This group of hard-working students are coached and sponsored by Social Studies teacher Patrick Mobley, and meets every Friday after school. Students can compete in a wide range of events from congress to duo debates on current events to more acting based events like humorous interpretation and poetry and prose interpretation. There is a tournament once a month from September through April, and CHS will be hosting a tournament Feb. 1-2. The team will be competing this weekend beginning at 3 p.m. Friday and all day Saturday at Bishop Manogue High School.

There will be a "Sadie Hawkins" dance for the student body at 7 p.m. Saturday. This "girls ask the guys" event will be held in Senator Square, and couples are encouraged to wear matching items.

CHS is hosting a "Your Future's So Bright Day" on Wednesday for students to explore and learn about career possibilities that both interest and best suit them. Students will be taking the PSAT, ASVAB test or the WNC Accuplacer. The Accuplacer test identifies areas of interest, skill and talent in 16 different career cluster areas.

Guest speakers from all walks of the community have been invited in for the morning sessions to provide presentations to student wanting to know more about certain career choices and the educational needs required to achieve them. A motivational speaker and a career/college fair with booths and handouts for student career and educational interests will round out the day in the afternoon session.

Huge kudos to Dean Michelle Lewis and all of the CHS staff helpers who have spent a great deal of time organizing and putting this day of opportunity together.

The CHS leadership students, led by President Jordan Nash and adviser Jennifer Tartan, are doing an awesome job increasing school spirit and bringing kids from all areas together through activities and competitions. The next thing on their docket is a door-decorating contest for all classrooms with a theme combining "Nevada Day" and Halloween holidays this month. Decorating begins Thursday, and judging will take place on Oct. 30.

We would also like to send a big "good luck" to the girls varsity golf team, as well as the boys and girls tennis teams, as they travel to Las Vegas this week for their respective state tournaments.

Varsity sports events this week are: Monday, 7 p.m. boys soccer at Douglas; Tuesday, 6 p.m. girls volleyball vs. Damonte, 7 p.m. girls soccer vs. Hug; Wednesday, 3 p.m. boys and girls cross country at South Lake Tahoe High School, 7 p.m. boys soccer vs. Hug; Thursday, 6 p.m. girls volleyball at North Valleys High School, 7 p.m. girls soccer at Douglas; Friday, 7:30 p.m. football at North Valleys High School, 3 p.m. boys and girls cross country at Spanish Springs; Saturday, 11 a.m. girls soccer at Damonte Ranch, 1 p.m. boys soccer at Damonte Ranch.
