Brinkley to fight October 20

RENO - If Let's Get It On Promotions has its way, Yerington's Jesse Brinkley and Joey "The KO Kid" Spina will meet in a rematch in Reno sometime next year. But first, both fighters will be highlighted Oct. 20 at Grande Exposition Hall in the Silver Legacy Resort Casino.

The 30-year-old Brinkley, 28-5 with 19 knockouts, will meet Donnell "Cadillac" Wiggins, 29-4-3 (14), of Covington, Tenn., in the 10-round main event and Spina, 19-1-1 (14), of Providence, R.I., will take on an opponent to be determined in the eight-round light heavyweight co-main event.

The eight-bout "Collision Course" is the second card presented by Terry and Tommy Lane, whose father - former Washoe County judge, referee and TV personality Mills Lane - originally founded the company.

In their first meeting the 30-year-old Spina, of Providence, R.I., scored a come-from-behind 11th-round stoppage of Brinkley, in an ESPN-televised fight on May 10, 2006.

Brinkley notched an exciting ninth-round knockout of Dallas Vargas in his last fight July 6 on Let's Get It On's first venture, while Spina hasn't fought since being stopped in three rounds by Peter Manfredo Jr. on Oct. 14, 2006.

Brinkley, who is trained by Peter Manfredo Sr., were both participants on the NBC reality series "The Contender."

Terry Lane said he has been hoping to promote the proposed Brinkley-Spina rematch since he saw the first fight and is looking to introduce Spina to Northern Nevada for the possible showdown.

"If they both win, the rematch will happen," Lane said. "There's a little more on the line (for Brinkley) with this fight (against Wiggins)."

The 27-year-old Wiggins has fought in every weight division from 168 pounds to heavyweight and has met top-caliber opposition in former IBF super middleweight titlist Jeff Lacy, Rodney Moore, Louis Azille and Otis Grant, among several others.

Wiggins is coming off a fourth-round stoppage to former IBF light heavyweight beltholder Willie Guthrie in December.

The card is also an opportunity for the Lanes to showcase their first two signees, Derek and Tyler Hinkey, of McDermitt.

Super middleweight Derek Hinkey, 3-0 (3), will meet Ray Craig 4-2 (2), of Oakland, Calif., and heavyweight Tyler Hinkey, 1-0 (1), will take on Alvaro Morales, 0-0-1, of Las Vegas.

Both bouts are scheduled for four rounds.

The brothers work with former United States Olympic coach Kenny Adams, who has also trained several professional world champions, including former WBO heavyweight titlist Ray Mercer.

Lane said the 6-foot-1 Derek, who is coming off a second-round knockout of Jovanni Rubio and will meet Craig at 163 pounds, is looking to come down to 160 pounds for future fights.

"He's big and physical," Lane said of Derek, who is also scheduled to box Dec. 6 in St. Louis. "He can box and knock you to palookaville as well."

Lane said Tyler, who weighed 272 pounds in his pro debut (a one-round technical knockout over Dan Evensen July 6), is down to 255 pounds for his match with Morales.

"Things are going really well for both of them," Lane said. "(Adams) feels good about both of them. They get great sparring in Vegas. They're maturing and improving. I can't wait until they get to 15 fights. We'll see what they're made of then. They're the future of this area."

Three other local fighters will be on the card. Reno's Jaime Rodriguez, 4-2 (2), will meet Carlos Musquez, 3-1-1 (1), of Sacramento, in a six-round junior welterweight bout, and in a four-round middleweight contest, Lake Tahoe's Simon Ruvalcaba, 3-8-2, will take on Carson City's Flavio Cardoza, 0-1.

Musquez owns a two-round TKO over Carson's Mike Peralta.

In other bouts, 23-year-old Brandon Gonzales 2-0 (2), of Sacramento, will meet Cromwell Gordon, 3-6 (3), of Los Angeles, in a four-round middleweight contest and 22-year-old Stan Martyniouk, a celebrated amateur from Antelope, Calif. via Estonia, will make his pro debut against Terrance Jett, 2-7-2 (1), of Las Vegas, in a four-round junior lightweight match.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the first bout beginning at 7.
