Carson runners sweep Lowry titles

The Carson High boys and girls cross country teams swept the titles at the Lowry Invitational on Friday.

Carson's boys won with 59 points, Douglas was second with 79 points and Lowry was third with 84 points. For the girls, Carson won with 26 points, Douglas was second with 49 points and Lowry was third with 88 points.

Northern 4A powers Galena, Reno and South Tahoe didn't compete in the meet. But Carson's finishers were still impressive, especially since both teams weren't at full strength.

Carson's boys were missing Caleb Carter, Wade Smith, Zack Mapes and Nick Schlager, who were all out with injuries. The Senator girls were also without their top runner in Yvonne Hollett, who was out with a sore knee. Carson coach Pete Sinnott said his team will be at full strength for the Northern 4A Championships.

Richard Shroy won the boys meet for Carson, setting a course record as he finished the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 16 seconds. That was a 20 second improvement over his time from last year on the course. "He's starting to really come into peak form," Sinnott said.

Also for Carson, Logan Philippi, running with an untied shoe for much of the race, finished seventh in 17:32, Ethan Graber finished 15th in 17:50, Brent Moyle finished 16th in 16:58, Evan Richards finished 20th in 18:17, Tyler Davies finished in 19:28 and David McMasters finished in 19:58.

For the girls, Douglas High's Whitney Lindsey also set a course record, winning the race in 18:50. Carson had six runners in the top 11. Gloria Sosa was second in 20:19, Christy Works was fourth in 20:37, Jenny Mital was fifth in 20:46, Haley Ward was seventh in 21:16, Kat Vonrumpf was eighth in 21:20, Amanda Gordon was 11th in 21:54 and Kristen Dockery finished in 23:40.

Carson's junior varsity boys finished third with 97 points behind Dayton (71) and Lowry (55). Andrew Richards finished seventh in 20:06 and despite going off course, Brandon Bournacorsi took eighth in 20:17. Also for Carson, Joe Ward finished in 21:10, Brandon O'Keefe finished in 21:52 and Noel Lopez finished in 22:13.

"Everybody really ran excellent," Sinnott said. "They all improved their times. The younger kids really stepped up."

Carson will next compete in the Sierra League Championships on Wednesday at South Tahoe. The Vikings and Reno will compete in the meet.
