Supermarket, other businesses planned for Silver Springs

A supermarket and other developments could be coming to the growing 5,000-person town of Silver Springs.

The development company Wood Rogers Inc., proposed building a 25-acre retail center that would house a supermarket, restaurants and other stores at the corner of Ramsey Weeks Cutoff and Green Street in what could be the new downtown.

Right now, the closest supermarkets are Scolari's, 15 miles north in Fernley; or Smith's, 24 miles west in Dayton.

Driving that far "gets kind of tiresome," said Margaret Ruckman, who works in the Silver Springs Chamber of Commerce.

The proposal has already been submitted to Lyon County, said Vida Keller, chamber of commerce president, and will be looked over more at a planning meeting Oct. 24.

"It's one of the biggest projects Silver Springs has ever seen," she said.

Developer George Peek also proposed a 120- to 160-acre town square that could have county offices, apartments, a park and retail space.

This hasn't been submitted to the county yet, though, she said.

Commissioner Larry McPherson, whose district includes Silver Springs, said the retail center might not be built for two years, but he likes the idea.

"Let's face it," he said, "we got to go somewhere down there."
