Fall festival and haunted house

A fall festival and haunted house will be open this weekend at the Community Roots Nursery on the corner of Highway 50 and Second Street, in Dayton.

The cost for the Haunted House, open from 6-9 p.m., $4 for kids ages 8-16 and $6 for adults. Cost for Fall Festival, from noon-6 p.m., is separate. The event is sponsored by Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties and the Lyon County Youth Connection. Call 246-0320.

Ghosts of Dayton return today

The "Ghostly Pioneers of Old Town Dayton Return ... Again," a free walking tour to be held from 5:30-9 p.m. today beginning at the Dayton Schoolhouse Museum, Sandy Lane at Logan.

Walkers can pick up a "Ghostly Map," a walking tour guide to the spirits, and see Old Town come alive with miners, emigrants, merchants, officials, townspeople and characters - both respectable and unusual. Children can get their maps stamped by the spirits and win prizes.

Lawman Chester Barton will be wandering Old Town looking for lawbreakers; Fannie Hazlett, who wrote Dayton's first history, will be hanging out near her house on Gold Creek; and Mary Matilda Fowler Johns Lothrop McDowell Stiles, who had four husbands and built the first Union Hotel, will be there, along with many others. James Dean films to play in Fallon

The Churchill Arts Council will present the three classic films starring James Dean as its Fall Film Series at the Barkley Theatre.

"East of Eden," based on John Steinbeck's novel of the same name, will be shown on Thursday; the critically acclaimed "Rebel Without a Cause" will be shown on Nov. 8, and the series will conclude with Dean's last film, "Giant," which also stars Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson on Nov. 15. All screenings will start at 7 p.m., and there will be a no-host art bar from 6-7 p.m.

Tickets for each film are $7 for CAC members and $10 for nonmembers and will be available at the Oats Park Box Office on the nights of the screenings. Special passes for all three films - $18 for CAC members; $27 for nonmembers - will be available for purchase at the Box Office only on Nov. 1. Call 423-1440.

Fallon college to stage 'Carousel'

Western Nevada College Fallon will offer the classic American musical "Carousel" at 7 p.m. Nov. 8-10 and 15-17.

Shows will be at the Churchill County High School Theater, 1222 S. Taylor St.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel" is the story of a small-town girl who falls in love with a carnival barker who has a bad reputation. It's a love, consequences and redemption set in a New England close-knit fishing community, explores the issues of social class and conduct.

Tickets are on sale at WNC Fallon. Prices are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, and $8 for children ages 12 and younger. Call 423-5186.

Hotel offers Halloween dinner dance

Will and Sheree Rose lead a Halloween party and dinner dance Wednesday at the Gold Hill Hotel, 1540 Main St., Gold Hill. Fine dining offered form 5-9 p.m. Costumes are encouraged, with prize going to the best costume. The party is free, dinner is extra. Call 847-0111.

Stagecoach

Halloween event fundraiser aids cancer survivor

A special Halloween event will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at 8150 Cheyenne Trail in Stagecoach to raise money for a cancer patient.

Resident Margo Easley said the event will benefit local horseman Theo Baringer, who is fighting squamous sarcoma, a disfiguring form of cancer.

The event will include a barbecue, auction, scavenger hunt on horseback and a trail ride to the top of the mountains overlooking Stagecoach. For those who don't ride, there will be wheelbarrow races, music, a petting zoo and pony rides, raffles and prizes.

A donation of $5 per person is asked, $2.50 for children over 5, and children under 5 are admitted free.

Easley said Baringer has undergone five surgeries as well as chemotherapy and radiation and is struggling financially.

Piper's to host 1864 Governor's Ball

Piper's Opera House will again host the 1864 Governor's Ball from 7-11 p.m. Saturday. The dance will feature live, Victorian music, and attendees should wear period costumes or Western or formal attire.

Tickets are $25 each and are tax deductible. Tickets will be sold at the door. Proceeds benefit Piper's Opera House. Call 847-0433.

'Mark Twain' gives history lecture at Piper's

McAvoy Layne will star in "The Nevada Story" beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Piper's Opera House. Nevada's own "Ghost of Mark Twain" presents a history of the Silver State in music, narration and multimedia. Tickets are $25. Call 847-0433 for more information.

Art Center offers spooky sleepover

St. Mary's Art Center, at Union and R Streets in Virginia City, is hosting a sleepover Halloween event. Visitors can spend Halloween night in the old hospital in Virginia City. The event includes a catered dinner by Secret Service Catering, followed by tales of the miners and their ghosts by local resident Carolyn Beaupre.

Cost is $65 for a double room and $20 for dinner, which will be chicken and sausage with pumpkin dumplings, autumn vegetables, hash browns and baked-apple cheesecake. To enjoy the stories without the dinner or sleepover, the cost is $7. Reservations are required. Call 240-7665.

Underage drinking focus of meeting

Community Chest Inc. will lead a discussion of the problems of underage drinking at a meeting from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Historic Fourth Ward School, 537 South C St., Virginia City. Lunch will be served. Call Jenna at 847-9311.

Goblin Parade slated for Halloween

Virginia City will have its third annual Goblin Parade beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The parade will begin at the Virginia City Jerky Company, 204 South C St., Virginia City.

Fourth Ward School offers Halloween night tours

The Historic Fourth Ward School will host its annual Haunted Halls event on from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, featuring ghostly tours of the old school.

The school is located at the south end of C Street, where highways 341 and 342 intersect.

V&T Haunted Train Rides for holiday

Ride the Haunted Halloween train on the V&T beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the V&T Depot on Washington and F streets, Virginia City.

Gold mill hosts haunted event

The Comstock Gold Mill on F Street in Virginia City will have its "Haunted Gold Mill" event at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Cowboys' Christmas show at Piper's

David John and the Comstock Cowboys will perform their annual "Christmas in the Sierra" production at Piper's Opera House for two shows, one at 4 p.m. and another at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8.

The band mixes Christmas songs cowboy-style with holiday originals and traditional carols. Santa will be on hand for the children.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and veterans, and $12 for children under 12.
