A 50-year-old California man died at Sand Mountain on Friday afternoon and his son was taken to a Reno hospital by Care Flight helicopter.
Churchill County Sheriff Rich Ingram confirmed that Steve Allen Molder, 50, from Pittsburg, Calif., died following an off-road vehicle accident on the back side of Sand Mountain.
The initial call was received by the dispatch center at 1:30 p.m. and was described as two people involved in an off-road dune buggy accident, both being nonresponsive.
Molder was transported by helicopter and his passenger, a 29-year-old male, was also taken to Reno. Ingram said the 29-year-old was conscious and talking at the time of transport.
Earlier, Molder had been in the dune buggy with his 24-year-old daughter. She was listed as his next of kin.
No further details were available as of Friday evening.
